Big Brother 21 Week 1 Recap: The Comeback Kids

The Big Brother House has come full-circle after it’s the first week of the Summer! When Season 21 kicked off last Tuesday, we were introduced to 16 new houseguests that would be competing for the half-million dollar prize. Flash-forward to the end of tonight’s Live Eviction episode, and we still have all 16 house guests in the house…albeit two of them are technically out of the game and at “Camp Comeback” (more on that in a bit). But we were fed several new twists over the first eight days of the game, and honestly, most of them seem pretty inspired. I for one, hate watching the same old twists, because it goes against the idea of “expecting the unexpected.” But with the initial exit of David, the “Whacktivity” competitions and tonight’s major Camp Comeback twist, I’m excited for how this show has come out of the gate this season.

Speaking of David, the poor guy will officially get another chance to compete, even though he is officially out of the game. As explained in the episode, the first four people to populate Camp Comeback will compete to get back into the game, with only one of them succeeding. That means we have two more evictions to go through where the HOH will not only have to vote someone out of the game, but those that vote these players out will then have to live alongside them in the house. Big Brother has built itself on the blindside and the “backdoor,” and the immediacy of having the person leave the house right away has allowed for many a lie to be told over the years. This. Change. Everything.

Big Brother 21 Week 1 Recap: The Comeback Kids

Jack – the newly crowned HOH – will be the first to deal with this new twist and its ramifications. It’s hard to fathom that he – or anyone – would betray the “Gr8ful” alliance while Camp Comeback is in play, because the results would be mind-boggling and disastrous…like, could you imagine that one of them gets backdoored? They would have no reason not to spill ALL of the alliance’s secrets now that they’ll still be in the house. So no, there will be no Gr8ful betrayals in the next two weeks, not until the game returns to some form of normalcy.

We will instead see a new style of gameplay that we just haven’t seen before, and it should be fascinating to watch play out. And how will Ovi and David impact the game now that they are in this unique position? Again, well-played Big Brother! You’ve got your hooks in me!

Big Brother 21 Week 1 Recap: The Comeback Kids

Speaking of Ovi, the biggest bummer in seeing him sent out of the game, is that we may never get a chance to see his “Nightmare” advantage play out. That would have been another game-changing twist, and I like how powerful it is. Getting to pull the carpet out from under a reigning HOH and keep both of their original nominations safe would have up-ended the entire game and would have made for some great TV.

Technically, Ovi’s power can still be played, if he were to return to the game, because it states that the power can be used during the first six weeks of the show. So assuming the Comeback Comp takes place in the next two to three weeks, he’d still have a small window of time to use it. Making things even more interesting in this scenario, is that Jack and Michie (the new thing we’re calling Jackson) would know that it was coming. So based on this possibility alone, Ovi is who I’ll be rooting for out of the Camp Comeback kids.

With Jack in power, he will likely go after those outside of his alliance, which could mean that Kathryn, Cliff, Jessica, Nicole, Sam and/or Kemi will most likely populate the block. But don’t forget that the next two weeks will bring with them two more Whacktivity Comps, meaning that things are going to be as unpredictable as ever.

Big Brother 21 Week 1 Recap: The Comeback Kids

Christie was the season’s first HOH and I don’t think she handled the pressure very well. That being said, kudos to her for sticking to her gut and not letting Jack strong-arm her decisions. It appears that for now her alliance has chosen to respect her decision to go against the group (who all wanted out Kemi), but I fear that this might have planted a seed of doubt within the rest of them when it comes to being able to count on her. We shall see.

But what are you all thinking about this cast? I think we’re set for another good season full of interesting personalities. From what some of the Live-Feeders say, Jack is more of a Jack-ass than what they’ve been showing on TV, but really he and Michie seem to be the game’s major power-couple. I also like where Isabella stands in the game, although she will have to watch how close she gets with Kemi.

I think it’s clear that both Tommy and Nick might go incredibly far in the game, based on the fact that both of them seem extremely well-liked, they both seem to be a bit under-the-radar and they both seem to possess some mad social game. But get comfortable with them all, because at least for the next two weeks, no one is going anywhere.

Big Brother 21 Week 1 Recap: The Comeback Kids

Big Brother 21 is averaging three episodes per week, and I know it can be a bit daunting to follow. So here is some help. I give you the upcoming Big Brother schedule:

  • Sunday, 7/7 – HOH Ceremony and next Whacktivity Comp
  • Wednesday, 7/10 – POV Competition and Ceremony
  • Thursday, 7/11 – Next Live Eviction Episode (3rd House Guest evicted)

This Season: You can count on at least one of these Recaps each week, usually following the Eviction. That means that I’ll be back with a Recap following next Thursday’s episode, discussing everything that happened over the course of these three episodes (above). In the meantime, if you have comments or are dying to discuss the show, use the comment section of this article (below) as a sounding board! Here’s looking forward to a fun-filled Summer full of “unexpected” twists, as we look to cover everything going on in the Big Brother House, from A to Zingbot.

See you next week!

TELL US – WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CAST THUS FAR? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CAMP COMEBACK TWIST? AND WHO DO YOU THINK JACK SHOULD NOMINATE FOR EVICTION?
