How Scheana’s Mental Health Struggles Make Her More Relatable

There is no question that, at times, Scheana Shay has been a pain in the butt of viewers who have found her, at best times, pleasantly annoying. She always gave sidekick vibes during the early days of Vanderpump Rules, but something has changed after marrying Brock Davies. I find myself enjoying Apples, listening to her point of view, and wanting to see more scenes with her and, of course, Summer Moon in it. I am chalking this up to Scheana being vulnerable with cameras.

Scheana always seemed to be in a fight or flight mode during the early days. And I get it; she had the big meanie Stassi Schroeder coming after her every other day. Scheana had to figure out a way to protect herself. Most of the time, this looked like her trying to talk back to the WeHo Witches and confiding in Lisa Vanderpump. But Season 11 is showing a whole new side of Scheana due to her mental health struggles.

Scheana’s Postpartum Struggles

In February 2023, Scheana first opened up about her mental issues after birthing her daughter, Summer Moon. For Scheana, it has been a terrifying journey with OCD that she is finally opening up about on screen. I would wager a lot of other viewers can relate to the mother of one’s struggles. Since her diagnosis, Scheana has been educating her followers, sharing with the Virtual Reali-Tea podcast that she is motivated “just because I feel like a lot of women will get misdiagnosed with postpartum depression when it’s postpartum OCD.”

Scheana shared that she often had intrusive thoughts after her daughter was born in 2021, which ultimately led to her being diagnosed. Scheana’s brutally honest spiral was rough for her but she is clearly hoping to help others. Without a doubt, fans are more receptive to Scheana because she is garnering a mass amount of sympathy.

Scheana Turns Over a New Leaf

With Scheana having a formal diagnosis, she has embraced the healing journey now. In a recent chat with Scary Mommy explaining how she hopes her story will inspire others to ask for help. The mother of one explained, “It’s okay to be honest about how they’re doing and that there are resources available to help cope with postpartum struggles like OCD.” For Scheana, she chose to turn to therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization, and Reprocessing (EMDR) treatment.

Scheana explained that her intrusive thoughts weren’t about hurting her child but more “I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what if she jumped out of my arms?’” Again, Vanderpump Rules viewers can undoubtedly relate to Scheana’s struggles. As we know, not many new moms feel safe sharing their feelings, with 70-80% of all new mothers experiencing some negative feelings or mood swings after the birth of their child. Scheana is urging those who feel down to “Open up about it with someone you feel safe with.” Is Scheana starting to look like a role model? Hell, yes, she is!

I Like Scheana…

Lord help me, but I think I am really starting to like Scheana. Could it be her plethora of new songs like Christmas Slay? Maybe. Her ability to make Scandoval about her? Maybe. But in all honesty, my newfound love for her has a lot to do with her finally embracing herself, flaws and all. She is inspiring to watch. And yes, I know she isn’t a Nobel Prize winner, I am aware she is still a reality TV star, but damn it, she has changed for the better and she deserves credit!

So let’s see where Vanderpump Rules Season 11 takes Scheana. I want to see her bare it all and become the new fan favorite. Yes, I am aware that some equated Scheana to the likes of cotton candy. It’s sweet and okay to have sometimes, but it doesn’t offer any nutrition, and it has no substance. But I think we need to take a new look at the Good as Gold singer and give her one last chance to impress. You can do it, Scheana!
