How Tom Schwartz Pitched Himself for Pump Rules

Tom Schwartz has been a prominent part of Vanderpump Rules for so long that it’s hard to believe he was just a recurring cast member at one point.

Most recently, Schwartz has been relegated to Tom Sandoval’s sidekick, choosing to vehemently defend his friend amid all his poor decisions. Of course, fans also know Schwartz as Katie Maloney’s ex-husband.

With so much history, it’s interesting to reflect on how it all began. And as far as beginnings go, Schwartz’s was definitely one for the books.

Schwartz pitched himself for Pump Rules by making a list of pros and cons

During his appearance on Bravo’s Hot Mic Podcast, producer Alex Baskin recalled Schwartz’s attempt at getting on VPR. “Yeah no, this was the best,” Alex said. He remembered it was shortly after Season 1, as the show was gaining traction.

Alex explained, “And clearly, at that point, the show was taking off and it was less about jumping on that rocket ship and it was more that all of your closest friends were doing this. So it was weird that they were part of this thing that was changing the group. And, you know, you weren’t there and you should have been. So you presented me with a really compelling diagram why.”

Alex admitted that he still owned the diagram, having kept it “somewhere.” He described the diagram as having two columns.

“It’s reasons that Tom Schwartz should be on the show in one column and then cons in the other column reasons you shouldn’t be. And so you’re singing your own virtues and you’re friends with everyone and funny and fun and all sorts of sh*t.”

As for what the con column contained, Alex remembered, “doesn’t work at SUR or Villa Blanca. It’s so funny.”

Vanderpump Rules Season 11 continues Tuesdays at 8/7c on Bravo.
