Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist shocked fans of The Golden Bachelor when they announced their divorce. After getting married in January 2024, the couple had barely been wed for three months before deciding to split.

After the news of Gerry and Theresa’s divorce plans surfaced, some fans began to wonder what this could mean for the upcoming The Golden Bachelorette. The good news is that Gerry and Theresa’s failed relationship likely won’t impact the newest spin-off. While it is certainly disheartening, it doesn’t seem like enough to cancel The Golden Bachelorette.

Bachelor & Bachelorette relationships fail all the time

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for couples from The Bachelor or Bachelorette to not work out. In recent years, the franchise’s success rate has plummeted. These days, it is not out of the norm to see couples from the franchise break up shortly after filming. While many couples do fall in love during filming, they find it challenging to keep the relationships afloat in the real world.

It’s disappointing to see how Gerry and Theresa’s marriage turned out, but it shouldn’t influence the future of the Golden Bachelor shows. The Bachelor and Bachelorette still air every season, despite their low success rate as of lately. Things shouldn’t be any different for the Golden Bachelor or Golden Bachelorette. Furthermore, the Golden Bachelorette is a different show entirely, and viewers certainly still want to watch it.

When Gerry and Theresa announced their split, Theresa emphasized that she didn’t want viewers to lose hope. Before breaking the news, Theresa talked about how much support she and Gerry had received from fans of the show. Furthermore, Theresa beamed about giving people hope, and explained that she didn’t want any of that to change.

The Golden Bachelor captured the attention of viewers from all walks of life, including senior citizens. It was the first time people watched seniors find love on reality television, which made it all the more interesting. Many older viewers who didn’t believe it was possible to find love in their 60s and above, were inspired by watching the show. The Golden Bachelor was honestly eye-opening for viewers of every age.

If The Golden Bachelorette were to get cancelled after Gerry and Theresa’s split, then many viewers could lose hope. It wouldn’t make sense for ABC to crush fans’ spirits like that, which is another reason why The Golden Bachelorette will likely still go on. While The Golden Bachelor may not have worked out for Gerry and Theresa, that doesn’t mean it can’t work out for other future couples.

Gerry was not the greatest lead

While many fans were shocked when Gerry and Theresa announced their intent to divorce, others were not. Some viewers had doubted Gerry for a while after some shady information about his past surfaced while The Golden Bachelor was airing.

On the show, Gerry claimed that he hadn’t had any serious relationships since his wife Toni passed away in 2017. However, while the show was airing, one woman came forward and claimed that she and Gerry had dated for three years. To make matters worse, the woman said that Gerry had abruptly ended things with her. Allegedly, the breakup was triggered by Gerry’s harsh response to the way she looked before going to his high school reunion.

It seemed like things between Gerry and his ex were pretty serious, as they even lived together for over a year. Furthermore, the woman claimed that Gerry had seen other women before becoming The Golden Bachelor as well.

In addition to this fiasco, there was also some doubt about Gerry’s career. On the show, he claimed that he had been a restaurant owner and retired early. It appears, however, that this was not the case. Gerry allegedly hadn’t owned a restaurant since 1985 and had several jobs way past the age of 55 when he claimed to have retired.

All the dirt that came out about Gerry certainly paints him in a questionable light. While Gerry was America’s hero when his season first started airing, that is no longer the case. Unfortunately, it seems like ABC may have just picked a poor lead with Gerry. His mistakes do not mean that a future Golden Bachelor or Bachelorette wouldn’t be successful. As a result, it seems almost certain that The Golden Bachelorette will still film and air this fall.
