President Donald Trump has blamed Joe Biden after China’s President Xi Jinping reportedly referred to the United States as a “declining nation” during talks in Beijing. Trump made those comments on Truth Social as U.S. and Chinese officials continued discussions aimed at managing tensions between the two countries.
Donald Trump agrees with President Xi’s ‘declining nation’ comment
The comment followed Xi Jinping’s reference to the “Thucydides Trap,” a theory often used to describe the danger of conflict between an established global power and a rising rival. Although President Xi reportedly did not directly say that the U.S. was in decline, Donald Trump used the moment to attack Joe Biden and defend his own record.
In his Truth Social post, Trump said President Xi’s remark was about the damage caused during Biden’s presidency. “When President Xi very elegantly referred to the United States as perhaps being a declining nation, he was referring to the tremendous damage we suffered during the four years of Sleepy Joe Biden and the Biden Administration, and on that score, he was 100% correct,” Trump wrote.
The president went on to criticize Biden-era policies on immigration, taxes, diversity programmes, and sanctuary cities. He argued that the country had been struggling under Biden but claimed the situation had improved under his leadership. “President Xi was not referring to the incredible rise that the United States has displayed to the world during the 16 spectacular months of the Trump Administration.”
Further adding, “Now, the United States is the hottest Nation anywhere in the world, and hopefully our relationship with China will be stronger and better than ever before!” However, relations between the U.S. and China have remained strained across both the Trump and Biden administrations. Under Biden, the two governments attempted to stabilize ties through meetings in Bali in 2022 and California in 2023, despite continued disagreements over trade, Taiwan, fentanyl trafficking, and the Chinese surveillance balloon incident.
Former President Joe Biden has yet to comment on it.
