Meghan Markle Advocates for Safer Digital Spaces for Children

Meghan Markle delivered a powerful speech at a Geneva event during her recent trip to Switzerland. She attended The Lost Screen Memorial, where she spoke about the dangers of digital spaces for children. Furthermore, the Duchess of Sussex offered comfort to families affected by harm on social media. She stood in front of the installations of screen images of kids who lost their lives due to digital violence.

Meghan Markle terms dangerous online spaces a ‘public health issue’ at Geneva event

Meghan Markle attended the inauguration ceremony of The Lost Screen Memorial in Geneva, Switzerland, ahead of the opening of the 79th World Health Assembly. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Archewell Philanthropies installed 50 light boxes. Those illuminated installations featured images of those kids who have lost their lives due to online harm.

“Behind me stands The Lost Screen Memorial,” Markle started. She stated that they were neither “statistics nor “avatars” and also “not data points.” “Children. Each name belonged to a child who was loved beyond measure,” she added. Furthermore, she raised a heartbreaking question: when could the children be free to use technology without fear of dangerous outcomes?

The mother of two then insisted that these outcomes “are not inevitable.” However, there could be prevention measures. According to her, there should be one principle: “Children must be safe by design, not safe by chance.” She termed the dangerous online spaces a “public health issue” and urged the public to take it seriously.

“Will we look back on this moment as one where, through collective action, the design of technology shifted – towards safety, dignity, and well-being? Or will we accept more names added to memorials like this? Because if an adult is barely able to survive the bullying and predation of the online world and the dangers that these platforms can bring, how is a child?”, the duchess said.

Markle shared her speech on Instagram.
