Donald Trump isn’t the only American politician being made fun of for his speeches. His right-hand man, JD Vance, has been the butt of jokes online after comments he made during a speech in Toledo, Ohio, on Thursday.
The Vice President was urging people to be patient about the economy. With banners, lower prices, and bigger paycheques visible behind him, JD admitted there was an affordability crisis in the United States. He said that former President Joe Biden’s administration is to blame. It’s his bizarre economic comparison that has people talking.

History may not have been the Vice President’s strongest subject in school. When it comes to transforming the American economy, JD said, “You don’t turn the Titanic around overnight. It takes time to fix what was broken.” His metaphor did not have the desired impact. That’s because the Titanic is, in fact, known for sinking after striking an iceberg, something many online were quick to point out.
Even politicians had fun upon hearing JD’s words at his expense. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker noted that “You don’t turn the Titanic around AT ALL.” California’s Governor Gavin Newsom told the Vice President it’s too late, adding that we’re all trying to get on a raft with Kate. That’s what Kate Winslet’s character ends up having to do in the blockbuster movie Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. One of former President Barack Obama’s former advisers, Dan Pfeiffer, also found JD’s mistake amusing.
While JD’s boss is traditionally the one the media and the public are fact-checking, the Vice President has gotten his share of confusion and backlash himself. In December, he admitted to being a conspiracy theorist. He had people scratching their heads by saying he only believed conspiracy theories that are true.
