Gavin Newsom Shades Donald Trump’s SOTU Hairstyle

Gavin Newsom took a sharp swipe at Donald Trump during the president’s State of the Union address, zeroing in on Trump’s hair in a moment that quickly went viral. The California governor didn’t hold back on social media, turning what was meant to be a major political night into an unexpected style jab that drew reactions from both sides.

Gavin Newsom calls out Donald Trump’s SOTU hair

Gavin Newsom took a swipe at Donald Trump as the president walked into the House chamber Tuesday for his State of the Union address. Posting on X, the Democratic governor mocked Trump’s thinner-looking hair and joked, “Oh no, Donald. You need some of my hair gel!!!” At the same time, Newsom used social media to push counterpoints while Trump was still speaking.

The dig follows a familiar playbook. Newsom has repeatedly gone after Trump’s appearance in the past. He has joked about the president’s hand bruising and even tweaked part of a TIME cover featuring Trump. His press team kept the trolling energy alive Tuesday by copying Trump’s signature posting style and claiming the governor had stolen some of the spotlight from the president’s big night.

Trump has never been shy about caring for his hair. Last year, he signed an executive order he said would help preserve it by rolling back environmental limits on showerhead water pressure. At the time, Trump vented about weak flow, claiming he had to stand under the shower for 15 minutes while the water came out “drip, drip, drip.”

The White House didn’t stay quiet after Newsom’s latest jab. A spokesperson told the media that the possible 2028 contender “should shut his filthy mouth” and focus on the backlash he faced earlier in the week. Some conservatives had accused Newsom of making a racist remark during a conversation with Andre Dickens (via Daily Beast). The governor pushed back hard, denying the claim and blasting what he called “fake f—ing outrage.”

Even as Trump delivered his marathon 108-minute address to Congress, Newsom kept the online commentary rolling. His press team even dropped an edited graphic branding members of Trump’s cabinet as “The Epstein Cabinet.”
