Teddi Mellencamp Hospitalized After Medication Triggered Potentially Life-Threatening Condition

Teddi Mellencamp just endured yet another hospital stay. This Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum is still fighting the good fight. As fans know, Teddi’s cancer journey remains ongoing, complete with treatments, side effects, and tests. However, one of her prescriptions recently triggered a potentially life-threatening condition almost overnight, giving Teddi one additional problem to worry about.

Teddi Mellencamp woke with sores all over her body

On yesterday’s episode of the Two T’s in a Pod podcast, Teddi explained, “I thought I had the flu. And then I woke up one day, and my whole body was just covered in, like, this terrible rash — like, you can’t even say it’s a rash because it’s almost like sores all over my entire body.” These sores “hurt and they burned.” So, Teddi went to urgent care, thinking she might be experiencing an allergic reaction.

But she wasn’t. Instead, her doctor told her to head to the emergency room. At the hospital, Teddi learned that one of her new medications caused Stevens-Johnson syndrome. As the Mayo Clinic describes, it’s “a medical emergency that usually requires hospitalization.”

Stevens-Johnson syndrome kills the top layer of one’s skin, causing painful blisters and rashes. It’s a rare, yet severe, potentially life-threatening condition, often triggered by certain medications. And people with cancer are at a higher risk of developing this syndrome.

As for Teddi, this syndrome gave her blisters in her mouth, around her eyes, and “just everywhere.” Therefore, she “couldn’t swallow.” But in the hospital, doctors quickly provided Teddi with steroid injections and antibiotics. And then, they checked Teddi in for an extended period of healing.

“The reason they were like, ‘You have to stay in [the hospital]’ is because they can start to get better and then shift right back up,” Teddi explained. Thankfully, after a few days, Teddi’s symptoms greatly improved. So, her doctors finally sent her home, right in time to celebrate her daughter Dove’s birthday.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills airs on Thursdays at 8/7c on Bravo. It streams on Peacock.
