John Oliver, appearing alongside Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers for a “Strike Force Five” reunion with Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” recalled the time when Kimmel sent him a text about Melania Trump not liking him. Oliver told the audience exactly what it feels like when you receive a message from Kimmel with a picture of the first lady staring back at you, and he was not mellow about it, either.
John Oliver reveals Jimmy Kimmel sent a text in group chat about Melania Trump calling him out
Five of the biggest names in late-night television crammed onto Stephen Colbert’s stage on Monday night, and within minutes the conversation touched upon a very modern kind of White House correspondence — the angry post from the first lady in the DMs.
Talking about Jimmy Kimmel’s titular text, John Oliver said, “It’s an amazing thing to get in a group text, just a text from Jimmy saying, ‘Oh boy,’ and then a picture of Melania [Trump] mad at him.” Oliver quipped as he laughed, “What a way to start the day.”
Meanwhile, Jimmy Fallon confessed to his own reply. He recalled his reply as he told the group, “Don’t be mad at me, but I liked it. I think she’s got a point,” which made everyone, including the audience, burst into laughter.
By now, the backstory is familiar, and it dates back to late April, when Kimmel used his ABC monologue to deliver a mock White House Correspondents’ Dinner speech, during which he joked that Melania had “a glow like an expectant widow.”
The joke was aimed at her age gap with Donald Trump. Eventually, it prompted the first lady to publicly demand ABC to “take a stand” against what she called “hateful and violent rhetoric.” At the same time, the president called for Kimmel’s firing on Truth Social.
Colbert asked Kimmel how it feels to wake up to that kind of attention, and the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host highlighted that “the only four people who care are sitting right here.”
John Oliver’s revelation of Jimmy Kimmel’s text gave everyone a good laugh, but it also demonstrated how the late-night hosts remain in solidarity — even if they “liked it” when it was Melania Trump calling out one of them.
