Jimmy Kimmel is not buying into former reality star Spencer Pratt’s Los Angeles mayoral campaign. The late-night host spent part of Wednesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! monologue criticizing the former reality star and warning voters against choosing candidates based on fame alone.
Spencer’s campaign has sparked conversation online as frustrated Los Angeles residents continue voicing concerns about housing issues, wildfire recovery, and city leadership.
Jimmy, who frequently discusses politics during his monologues, used Spencer’s growing visibility to draw comparisons to celebrity-driven politics on a national level.
The host says the former reality star is “looking for attention”
During Wednesday night’s episode, Jimmy questioned whether Los Angeles voters were falling into a familiar pattern.
“Are we really going to risk repeating that mistake we made with [Donald] Trump in L.A., of all places? Mayor should not be your first job. The mayor of L.A. is in charge of a $14 billion annual budget. Spencer Pratt is not the person who should be in charge of that.”
The comedian later described Spencer as “another narcissist looking for attention.”
Jimmy also compared Spencer’s popularity to Donald Trump’s media-driven rise. However, he argued Trump at least held another job before reality television fame.
“He wasn’t good at the job. He got all the money from for it his dad. The only thing he was good at was promoting himself. And it turned out that was enough.”
Jimmy admitted many Los Angeles residents feel disappointed with city leadership right now. He said that frustration partly explains Spencer’s growing support online.
“So then you get a guy who is on a reality show, who’s on a lot of reality shows, his profession is to be the screaming jerk on reality shows, and his house burns down.”
He continued by saying Spencer’s anger connects with residents facing similar frustrations across the city. Still, Jimmy questioned whether the former reality star actually offered solutions.
Jimmy eventually encouraged viewers to support another candidate instead.
“If you don’t want to vote for Karen Bass on June 2, I get it, but you better find somebody else to vote for, and preferably somebody who isn’t wasting our time and money to get himself back on television.”
Spencer later responded on X with a short message of his own: “Jimmy’s secretly voting for me.”
