Donald Trump’s Latest Geography Claim Has One Very Large Problem

A casual remark on Iran at a global summit has landed President Donald Trump in hot water. In the comment, he incorrectly described the geography of the Middle East. Standing next to a key Gulf ally, the US leader made a blunder, a claim that has been disproven by any world map.

Donald Trump makes Iran-Qatar geography error during G7 summit

Speaking to reporters at the G7 summit in France, Donald Trump spoke of Qatar’s physical position to Iran while making a fundamental error. Addressing the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, he stated, “They are the closest to Iran physically, so, with other countries, I noticed that they had to travel about 45 minutes to get there. With you, you could walk right across the border, so you are in a more dangerous position.”

The reality is starkly different, as Qatar and Iran do not touch. The two nations are separated by the Persian Gulf, with roughly 119 miles of water lying between them. Iranian state media seized on the blunder, posting a map on X alongside video of Trump’s comment.

This is not the first time Trump has made the same geographical misjudgment. During an October press interaction on Air Force One, he told reporters, “They’re literally, you walk over from Iran to Qatar. You can walk it in one second. You go ‘boom boom,’ and now you’re in Qatar, that’s tough territory.” That earlier statement also drew widespread ridicule from people (via Huffpost).

The latest incident adds to a pattern of high-profile geography stumbles within Trump’s circle. His former close ally, Kristi Noem, recently faced similar criticism when asked to name America’s best friend in South America. She listed El Salvador and Costa Rica, but both are located in Central America. Noem did correctly mention Ecuador and Argentina during her response, but the initial misidentification dominated headlines.
