Charli XCX has revealed the true meaning behind one of her new album’s lyrics. The singer revealed that her song “Wink Wink” is a song about how her life changed after marrying George Daniel. She also revealed that the song directly addresses some of her past partners.

During a special BBC show on Jack Saunders’ radio show, Charli explained the source of inspiration. Charli wed The 1975 drummer George Daniel in July 2025 in a small ceremony at London’s Hackney Town Hall. Later, the couple celebrated with a larger wedding in Sicily that September. While discussing her seventh album, Music, Fashion, Film, she explained that “Wink Wink” came from her past relationships. She said previous partners often misunderstood her and made her feel pressure to become the person they wanted.
“I think it’s actually about romantic relationships and, in the past, having maybe been a bit misunderstood by previous partners and having felt the pressure of wanting to become what they wanted me to be,” Charli said. She said that everything had changed since she met George. “Whereas now being with George… he gets it and he gets me and it’s sort of… a different thing,” she explained. Charli said the song tells her exes, “yeah sure I’m this perfect person now wink wink,” before adding, “whereas in reality who is perfect, you know? No one.”
Before her relationship with George, Charli had an on-and-off romance with producer Huck Kwong for seven years before they split in 2022. She was also rumoured to be dating Royal Blood’s frontman, Mike Kerr. Rather than dwell on the past, Charli said the track “Wink Wink” reflects where she is now in life. She said George Daniel understands her in a way her previous partners never did.
