The new season will focus on the June 1993 incident involving Lorena and John Bobbitt. Lorena made international headlines after attacking her husband with a knife. She later claimed years of rape and domestic abuse preceded the incident.
John denied Lorena’s domestic violence allegations at the time. Their case quickly became a major media spectacle across the United States. The intense coverage also turned their personal trauma into widespread public entertainment.
The series will reportedly examine the events surrounding the attack and subsequent trials. It will explore how the case became connected to debates about gender. The story will also examine how sensational coverage shaped public perceptions.
Lorena was charged with malicious wounding following the 1993 incident. A jury later found her guilty by reason of insanity. She subsequently spent 45 days in a Virginia psychiatric facility.
John was also tried for marital sexual assault after Lorena’s allegations. A jury acquitted him of rape in November 1993. His severed penis was recovered and later successfully reattached during surgery.
The couple eventually finalized their divorce in 1995. However, their controversial story continued attracting attention for decades. Lorena later became an advocate for domestic violence and sexual assault prevention.
Good American Family will continue as a true-crime anthology series. Its first season focused on the controversial story of Natalia Grace. The second season will now turn toward the Bobbitt case.
Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo will executive produce the upcoming season. She previously produced and starred in the anthology’s first season. The Daily Mail reported that producers were revisiting the infamous case.
Lorena now uses her birth name, Gallo, and previously shared her perspective publicly. She appeared in Amazon Prime Video’s 2019 documentary series Lorena. Jordan Peele produced the four-part documentary about her story.
The Hulu series will offer another dramatized examination of the case. It will revisit the incident while exploring the trauma and media frenzy surrounding it.
