We don’t necessarily expect Andy Cohen to ask hard-hitting questions during Watch What Happens Live, but things got serious during the July 24 episode. He asked Loose Women star Denise Welch about the public perception of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and her answer was remarkably earnest.
Denise Welch calls out the press for “bullying” Meghan Markle
On WWHL, Andy asked Denise to weigh in on how the general public in the UK feels about the royal couple right now. Of course, people have criticized the couple for years, but have things improved? According to Denise, not really.
“Well, I have a very different view to a lot of people, and on the show that I do at home, Loose Women, I’m like the only person who flies the Harry and Meghan flag, and I don’t know,” Denise shared, noting that she had never met the couple personally.
Denise continued, “I just think that the amount of bullying by the press, British and American, that that woman gets. Remember, she was in those rooms, a lot of them, you know as young Black American woman. She had a big voice in UNICEF and in the United Nations. She was in a lot of those rooms before Harry.”
According to Denise, critics of the couple need to be more empathetic to what Harry experienced in his life as well. She called it “quite admirable” how he has navigated the royal world as an adult.
During Denise’s impassioned response, she also noted how Meghan caught flak for opening up about her mental health. She can’t wrap her head around why people would use that as a reason to attack Meghan, rather than showing empathy.
“I suffered severe postnatal depression, hospitalized after I had Matthew,” Denise admitted. “So I really empathize and sympathize with somebody who was open about that and she got ridiculed and hated. It’s like, what has she really done? You know, and every single day she is battered.”
Denise’s response received a round of applause from the Watch What Happens Live audience. Will it change anyone else’s opinion? Unfortunately, probably not.
