In Whose Name?, a new documentary focused on the controversial rap star Kanye West, hit theaters on September 19. Moments captured in the film show intimate pieces of his life as his relationship with Kim Kardashian was coming to a close. Over 3,000 hours of footage was captured. From the disaster that happened when he was the host of Saturday Night Live in 2018 to struggles with his mental health. Of course, his life with Kim and the Kardashian family unfolds on screen.
Director Nico Ballesteros was only 18 when he started the film. He spent six years documenting the Gold Digger singer’s life from 2018 until 2024. At the end of the documentary, Kanye mentions how nearly every waking minute of his life was recorded for the world to see. Reviews of the film say it is hard to watch as Kanye struggles with his mental health.
Few people in his life were brave enough to confront Kanye on his behavior in the film. It’s no surprise that when one person did, it caused an outburst of tension. One of these moments happened between Kanye and his former mother-in-law, Kris Jenner.

A complex confrontation between Kanye and Kris unfolded in the film. A few years after his bipolar disorder diagnosis in 2016, Kanye and his former mother-in-law got into it about his mental health. Coming off his infamous visit to the White House, Kanye is wearing a Make America Great Again hat during the conflict.
“No one from the family has taken any responsibility for my hospital visit,” he snaps at Kris. “That’s 50 percent of what people say at least. Am I lying?”
Kris replies that it doesn’t matter, and Kanye bites back that it does. “I haven’t finished the sentence,” Kris tells the rapper. “It matters to us and you, it doesn’t matter what the internet says. It matters what we think, Ye.”
Kanye steps away temporarily and returns to ask Kris if she believes she played a role in his mental health. “Yes! I’m saying yes. and I love you,” Kris says. “I love you, I don’t want you to be not perfect. I love you, and I want my daughter to love you the way you want her to love you.”
