Just weeks after her fiance revealed she was pregnant once again, Teen Mom 2 star Leah Messer was photographed smoking while pregnant.
The 19-year-old mother of 2-year-old twins (Ali and Aleeah) was photographed above, with her fiance Jeremy Calvert, exactly a week ago trying to go incognito while smoking in West Virginia.
According to the photo agency which snapped Leah on January 12, she had just gotten into a car accident, crashing her brand new Chevy Suburban and was looking stressed.
Reports came out last week that Leah was pregnant again with twins, but she quickly took to Twitter to deny the report. She, however, continues to remain mum on her pregnancy and engagement.
Jeremy confirmed the pregnancy news earlier this month, also revealing he proposed to her over the holidays after just five months of dating. It’s safe to assume the pregnancy came before the engagement.
Leah has been receiving a ton of backlash from fans of the MTV hit show, rightfully so, who feel having baby no. 3 at the tender age of 19 isn’t the smartest choice.
Unfortunately, Leah isn’t the first reality star to be caught smoking while pregnant as back in Nov. 2010, TMZ published a photo which showed Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kim Zolciak smoking while expecting.
As we reported back then, there are major risks associated with smoking while pregnant. Below are some according to WedMD:
- Lower the amount of oxygen available to you and your growing baby.
- Increase the chances of miscarriage and stillbirth.
- Increase the risk that your baby is born prematurely and/or born with low birth weight.
- Increase your baby’s risk of developing respiratory (lung) problems
In addition to the above risks, smoking while pregnant can also result in lifelong effects on a baby’s brain. Children of pregnant smokers are especially likely to have learning disorders, behavioral problems and relatively low IQs.

@Lionel, hilarious!! I was thinking the exact same thing. But seriously, I think that Ali might suffer from a form of dwarfism, her arms are not normal looking at all.
I know there will be those who say “her body, her choice,” but I’m saying it anyway. LEAH, you are a f—ing idiot and so immature it blows my mind. You already have your hands full with 2 adorable little girls. One of which has some obvious health issues. How incredibly selfish of you to #1 get yourself pregnant again, thus taking time away from the 2 babies you have and #2 smoking away on a cancer stick depriving your unborn child of oxygen and putting their life at risk. That baby doesn’t have a choice between smoke filled air or not, that baby is relying on you to be smart enough to know better! Since you have a child who was born with development and health issues, one would think you are smart enough to know smoking and it’s side effects probably aren’t going to help your unborn child’s chances of avoiding possible birth defects.
Time to start acting like a mom Leah! It’s not anyone’s fault but yours that you got pregnant at a young age. You have children that rely on you. You and your ex-husband. Not your boyfriend, not your parents, YOU. Start acting like one.

I will judge and make comments about all these girls and mongoloid children all I want. They ask for it every time they “perform” in front of the cameras and it appears on my TV.
As a parent of a special needs child, I cannot believe how unbelievably selfish Leah is. Smoking while pregnant?! Isn’t she also the parent of a special needs child?!
I know one thing, if I’d smoked while I was pregnant, and something was “wrong” with my baby, I’d never forgive myself. NEVER. Even if the smoking probably wouldn’t have caused the problem. Leah has the ability to have children; while some people who would die to be parents do not. Her children did not ASK to be here. And they most certainly did not ask to be swimming in a womb filled with Marlboro Lights!
MTV -Please remove this CHILD from your show. She isn’t getting the point of the show. And if a chick who is ON the show isn’t getting the point about birth control and how hard parenting is; well, then NO ONE WILL.
And just because this story has infuriated me so much, I’d like to add –those commenters here who are saying “she’s a teenager and she should enjoy herself and it was only one cigarette…” –You people must also come from the sticks of West Virginia! How incredibly ignorant to state such things!! I’m sure smoking did not contribute to Ali’s health problems; she clearly looks to have some form of dwarfism. Clearly.
Leah is NOT a good mom. A good mom would focus on the children she has already (at 19!!) and decide to be done having children for, I don’t know, maybe 5+ years more?! Maybe forever?! It is truly outrageous that the premise of this show is about teen parents and the difficulties and the struggles. Wasn’t this show suppose to help teens see how tough it is to be a teen parent and to be used as an example of why not to get pregnant?
Now we have this one just 19 years old with twins, one of which is going to have special needs for the rest of her life. And this nitwit gets herself pregnant again!
The smoking part, shame on her her. Doesn’t she realize how this will affect her babies health. Does she want another special needs child?
Sadly and as someone already said, this is one girl that hasn’t learned from her first mistake, she’s now on her second mistake, already divorced once and working on marrying a second time and how long will this one last considering she’s known the guy for only a few months.
Yes her life is already mapped out for her. She’s going to be living in a trailer park somewhere with multiple kids from multiple fathers and no education, working at a convenience store making minimium wage.
How sad for the children. Instead of getting herself knocked up again, she needs to get an education so my tax dollars won’t be supporting all the kids she’s going to be having.
By the time she’s 30 I see her having around 5 kids, different fathers. Apparently appearing on teen mom as a deterrent from doing this to your own life, she’s the role model for trashy, lazy women who just keep sleeping with different men, not bothering with birth control. I sincerely hope that in the picture above, Leah’s fiance Jeremy is quietly asking her what the F*CK she thinks she’s doing standing there puffing on a cigarette — and cutting off a vital flow of oxygen to HIS baby she’s carrying around inside of her.

I couldn’t believe it when I heard this Teen Mom was pregnant, again! Like she doesn’t have it hard enough with twins, one of which, lil Ali, who has required much needed medical necessity and physical therapy. Not to mention the stress and worry every parent goes through waiting for test or scan results. My hubby and I have been thru that w/ our son when he was 18 mths old and suffered a seizure out of state. I just pray this couple has a healthy child and that this pregnancy and marriage isn’t solely for financial gain by MTV or the tabloids.
Unfortunately having a mom that smokes is the least of that childs worries.

Wow! Some of you people on here are fucking crazy…I don’t live in West Virgina Im a New Yorker…I know that her smoking a cig isnt gonna make her baby retarded. If you think that then your ignorant. I don’t want to hear crap about other women who would give anything to have a baby and can’t…wah wah wah…if GOD wanted you to reproduce then he would have made you capable of doing so. Just becasue someone smokes when they are pregnant does not make them a bad mom and you can’t compare smoking cigarettes to drinking or smoking crack – those have been proven to cause harm to an unborn baby. Smoke does not pass through the placenta. Worst case is the baby is born addicted to nicotine, has a low birth weight or comes prematurely, but usually isnt the case. Smoking is not good for you or your baby but not the worst thing ever, there are foods, drinks and drugs that can cause more damage. Also just beacuse you have a child with special needs does not mean that its selfish to have more children. I don’t think it was the best idea to get pregnant again, but shit happens, and everything happens for a reason.
People, as a neo-natal nurse I can safely assure you then when you smoke… so does your baby. Period. End of story. That’s it. That’s all.
When you smoke you inhale nicotine (which is a 100% bona fide form of POISON), lead, arsenic and carbon monoxide. And as any medical professional will tell you, these poisons DO get into the placenta, the tissue that connects you to your baby and sends oxygen and nutrients to the child. BELIEVE IT. These same poisons keep your baby from getting the proper supply of nutrients and oxygen that he or she needs to grow, thus what is continually being mentioned here about “low birth weight.”
But beyond that, smoking during pregnancy has most definitely been found to be significantly associated with other several serious birth defects, including heart defects, clubfeet, eye defects, gastrointestinal defects, musculoskeletal defects, missing or extra digits, facial defects and hernias.
And from what I’m hearing whenever I tune into this Teen Mom show, Leah Messer’s little girl is said to possibly be affected by at least TWO of the birth defects I’ve just mentioned.
Yes, we all know shit happens. But why let this kind of detrimental shit happen to you, or especially to your unborn baby? As a poster said above, buy more condoms than cigarettes, and make sure you’ve kicked the smoking habit completely BEFORE you decide to bring a child into this world.

Thank you Rya B!!! I work in the medical profession as well and know all of these things myself. I am not a nurse, however I work with them daily and have worked with the newborn/post partum nurses and patients for quite some time. These are the facts people. Quit justifying her poor, ignorant choices. If she was drinking beers, eating sushi, or riding roller coasters, it’s all a danger to her unborn child who has ZERO say in what kind of environment Leah puts her in. Lets see how many times some of you can stand being trapped in a small space with minimal oxygen and blood flow before your own health suffers. Then maybe you would understand how much it truly affects pregnancy. It’s truly sad how many people do not understand that everything the mother ingests, breathes, eats, or drinks makes it to the baby.
As for Leah, you better wise up girl. Keep going the direction you’re going and you will end up exactly how some of these others have said. Miserable, broke, and unable to care for your now 3 children who depend on you for everything.

While I personally quit smoking before concieving my own twins and never had even one drag while pregnant, give the girl a break! She was just in an accident. As long as she is isn’t doing it all the time.
And for Sarah… and her comment about if god wanted people to reproduce it would happen… Seriously? I would think that watching the show would show how stupid that comment is. Your god allows people like Jenelle to reproduce and yet there are so many people out there that desperately want children and can’t. Infertility is a medical condition not a punishment from your god! And for you to tell people otherwise is ignorant.

Telling mothers who smoke to put their babies up for adoption is just cruel hearted. If they eat healthy, take their vitamins, get a little exercise, and love their children, it doesn’t matter At least she’s not doing drugs or drinking. If god doesn’t want the baby to be with that mother he will make his point. It is not up to any of you to decide that.
Everything Jeremy does is soley because he is going to get financial gain from MTV. In the “real” world he would’ve never chose Leah, just from the looks of her alone. She is trashy and scrauny looking and the total opposite of what he dated before.
