Sharon Needles Talks Winning RuPaul’s Drag Race! Plus, Find Out Why Willam Belli Was Eliminated!

Alright, RuPaul’s Drag Race Fans (me included) this one’s for you and I’m serving up some gossip realness. Sharon Needles, our beloved freaky queen broke Drag Race tradition and was the first non-fishy lady crowned America’s Next Drag Superstar. Now the lady of the night speaks out about working with RuPaul and beating arch nemesis Phi Phi O’Hara!

Also, can we please talk about why Phi Phi made it to the final three anyway? Ugh. First of all the always humble Sharon confesses – she wasn’t at all surprised by her win! “I wasn’t really surprised at all. Being a drag queen is all about pulling out the stops and freaking them out,” she tells Entertainment Weekly.

“In all honesty, though, Chad Michaels and I were expecting a tie between me and her and that we would crack that crown in half, which would have been almost more of a pleasure and it would make more sense than to just have one of us beat Phi Phi,” Sharon snarks. Adding, “We figured possibly that RuPaul would keep the crown for herself.”

And if Phi Phi was crowned the winner, Sharon let’s us know she would’ve pulled a Willam Belli and hurled right there on stage! I can just hear Ru now, ‘Oh look, Sharon’s serving up some drunken sorority girl realness!’ “I love the unexpected, and I love to gag,” Sharon shares. As for Phi Phi’s talents, Sharon says: “It’s drag people have seen before, and her attitude toward a sisterhood amongst fellow drag queens is just absolutely evil.”

Sharon says her experience on the show was positive – save for Phi Phi – and one thing she would change is developing more of a sisterhood with Willam. “I guess the only thing I regret is not trying to invest more of a friendship and time with Willam. At the time I did have some hesitation — and maybe even some hostility — toward Willam because I knew that there were things going down.”

“I was so stressed out. I’m not a rule follower, and I’m not someone who does what someone says, but in this competition, I was a prisoner, and I was listening to the warden,” Sharon continues. “But after the show ended — and me spending some time with her — she’s one of the most giving, relevant, funny, witty, and — regardless of what Phi Phi says — one of the most talented queens I’ve ever met. With a beard or without.”

And speaking of Willam, the Jessica Simpson (sans pregnancy) mimicking queen made quite a name for herself when she puked off the side of the stage during an elimination challenge AND after winning the challenge was disqualified.

RuPaul and co. did not reveal the reason for Willam’s abrupt termination, but in the recent reunion the reason was untucked. It seems Willam’s husband was making some conjugal visits to the contestant’s hotel. Which is a huge faux pas as contestants aren’t supposed to tell anyone the details of competition and visitors are not welcome!

Sharon claims that’s not the real reason, however, saying: “I’m not going to elaborate. I take the confidentiality contract that I signed very seriously, but we’ll roll with that.” It seems Sharon thinks it was somewhat of a publicity stunt orchestrated by Willam to elevate his celebrity.
