At this point, Season 3 of Real Housewives of Potomac is all about Karen Huger’s refusal to be open about her family’s financial problems.
A couple of the women empathize with Karen, but Ashley Darby is not one of them. She’s not buying what Karen is selling and she has no qualms calling out the self-proclaimed Grand Dame of Potomac.
This whole season Karen has insisted that she had “no idea” that her husband owed millions of dollars in taxes since they’ve always filed their taxes separately.
During an appearance on the Hey Frase podcast, Ashley pointed out a major flaw with that explanation. Ashley said, “My only issue with that is she says that she and Ray [Huger] file separate income taxes, but from what income, Karen? You didn’t work for twenty years. On what did the IRS tax you?” She added, “The jury is still out. I haven’t gotten an answer.” And you probably never will. Not this season. Not at the reunion taping. Not next season or the one after it.
Fans of the franchise know that Karen isn’t the first Real Housewife with tax issues. Ashley referenced Teresa Giudice when she continued to discuss Karen’s financial situation.
Ashley shared, “Teresa is my friend.” She continued, “I empathize with Karen because I saw and I talked to Teresa about the toll it took on her life, so I’m like ‘dang.’’”
Even so, she doesn’t see many parallels between the two situations. Ashley admitted, “At the same time, Karen is just so inauthentic about things that it’s just hard for me to even really feel for her. What am I even empathizing with? Who are you? The jury is still out.”
Ashley threw in one last bit of shade: “I’m hoping for her sake that Karen learns to be a little more authentic.” Part of me agrees with that sentiment. I just want her to own the situation so we can all move on to another story line. Selfishly, I can’t help being entertained by Karen’s delusions of grandeur.
