NeNe Leakes and Marlo Hampton have a looooong history on Real Housewives of Atlanta. The two went back and forth for years and I think the best way to describe them would be “frenemies.” Their relationship often felt like more of a strategic alliance than actual friendship. Which was the case with a lot of NeNe and her castmates.
NeNe recently took to Instagram Live to update fans on where the two stand. The Instagram account RHOA The Total Tea screen recorded NeNe’s video to share with followers. In the video, NeNe is getting her makeup done. When the topic of Marlo comes up on the live comments, NeNe asked, “What’s she doing now?” She laughed, “They say she’s wearing furs and running around in the sun.”
She continued, “I don’t know what’s going on with her, honey. I try not to keep up. I don’t know unless y’all tell me, I don’t try and keep up.” Whoever was doing her makeup broke in to prod, “What’s the tea?” NeNe then explained, “I haven’t spoken with Marlo in a long time. It’s crazy. We don’t have any issues but I don’t know what’s going on. You know sometimes with people, it’s just like that.” She went on, “That’s how that show is. It just makes them – I don’t know what it does. Oh, if you’re not on the show they prefer you to not talk to people who are not currently on the show. That’s what they do. That’s what they do – that’s to conquer and divide. So, that’s what happened.”
NeNe then concluded, “That’s what happens when you get on the show or you’re working on the show and I’m not working on the show. They don’t want them to talk to you. Whatever the whole relationship with you is to conquer and divide.” Then she fake cried, “Isn’t that terrible?”
For those of you who heard NeNe’s recent comments about Marlo, their lack of communication wouldn’t be a surprise. On a podcast back in June of 2021, NeNe shot down the host who said he thought Marlo earned her peach a long time ago. NeNe responded, “No, I disagree. The reason I disagree is because if you’ve been doing something for so long. I don’t see the network giving you a peach.”
She added, “I am just speaking from my eyes and the way I view the network and the way television works. You have given everything for this amount of pay. Why do they need to give you a peach? What’s going to change? They’re getting everything they need right now. What are they gonna get when they give you a peach?”
Clearly Bravo felt differently and Marlo did end up with her peach, after being a “friend of” for 10 years. NeNe is currently suing Bravo, RHOA production and producers, including Andy Cohen. NeNe is alleging that “NBC, Bravo and True foster a corporate and workplace culture in which racially insensitive and inappropriate behavior is tolerated — if not, encouraged.” NeNe left the show in 2020 and later claimed she was pushed out after publicly revealing the racism she allegedly experienced.
