How Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz’s Dynamic Has Changed Since Divorcing

In April 2022, Vanderpump Rules fans learned that Bubba, aka Katie Maloney, had grown tired of her Beta husband, Tom Schwartz, choosing to file for divorce instead of trudging along. In the early years, the two seemed like a normal young couple except the occasional drink tossed in their face. For a while, I dare say they were the couple to beat, but along the way, it became painfully apparent that love wasn’t going to be enough.

Season 10 showed that you can’t stay friends with your exes even if you are trying to mule your dogs back and forth. I’ll say it once, and I’ll say it again: it is called a break-up because it is broken. There is no way in hell you should be staying friends with your ex unless, of course, there are children involved. But alas, Tom and Katie had to learn the hard way and, in the process, showed viewers what they don’t want out of a relationship.

Is Katie Mean to Tom?

Lala Kent certainly thinks so. Recently, she shared her thoughts on Watch What Happens Live after being asked if Katie and Schwartz could ever be friends again, noting, “They have a really funky dynamic, and I’m here for it. They really do. It is. She like emotionally abuses him, he loves it. It works. It’s fascinating. It does.”

But Katie’s microaggressions were often forced by Tom’s lack of accountability. It became evident that Tom was more interested in impressing the guys instead of comforting his wife. In the end, he paid a heavy price, which included the dissolution of his marriage.

The Two Were Toxic

If I were Katie or Tom, I don’t know if I would have gone through with the marriage. I mean, Schwartz’s best friend, Tom Sandoval, never liked Katie; that’s a red flag. Katie never felt respected by Schwartzy: red flag. What caused the most damage was that neither felt they were heard within the union, with Katie sharing on Vanderpump Rules that her needs were not being met.

Tom’s behavior toward the end was not chivalrous, as Bravo cameras often caught him belittling Katie to the rest of the group. All the Something About Her owner wanted was for her husband to show he supported her with undying devotion. My favorite piece of marriage advice is you agree in public and disagree in private. Sadly, Tom never got that memo, which often caused even more tension between the two.

Tom Never Respected Katie

After a deep dive into their early timeline when Katie had long hair, I started to remember that Tom was never kind to his wife. During a segment on Watch What Happens Live, Tom came across as disgusting. Every answer he gave Andy showed him trying to make her feel bad and then making the “aw shucks” face when the jabs didn’t land. Ironically, he might have a lot in common with Sandoval. It was just that Schwartz’s form of toxic narcissism was more lowkey but always there in the shadows.

The saddest part of the segment was how unaffected Katie appeared to be. The way he treated her was disgusting, and I would wager most fans could never imagine having a husband who goes on live TV and actively shames and degrades their spouse like that.

Cordial at Best

Currently, the two are kind of on speaking terms. Fans saw Katie head into TomTom to support DJ James Kennedy, but it was clear it wasn’t her stomping grounds anymore. Katie has made a stand, noting she would not be allowing him to treat her like he had in the past. Both have changed so much from when they first started dating till now, and for their peace of mind, I hope they continue to keep their distance.
