How Teddi Mellencamp’s Husband Edwin Arroyave Talks to Kids About Her Health

It’s been five months since Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Teddi Mellencamp filed for divorce on November 1, 2024. Despite their separation, her husband Edwin Arroyave is supporting her through her treatment for stage 4 melanoma cancer.

“No matter what, I will always love Teddi,” Edwin said on the April 3 episode of The Eds podcast. “She’s been a big part of my life. And I just like taking care of people, it’s just what I do.”

“So [taking care of Teddi] wasn’t even like a question,” he added. “It was reflexive. And the main thing is … getting her to a point where she felt confident, she felt like she wasn’t alone.”

Since 2022, Teddi has been open about her fight with melanoma. In February 2025, she shared that the cancer had metastasized to her lungs and brain. Surgeons removed the largest of the tumors at that time. But in late March, her doctors discovered four more tumors in her brain.

“I’m fighting for my life,” she said. “But also for my family’s life and all the people I love.”

Teddi and Edwin were married for 13 years and share three young children: Slate, 12; Cruz, 10; and Dove, 5. Edwin also has a daughter from a previous relationship, Isabella.

One of the toughest parts of going through this cancer journey has been reassuring their children. Edwin tries to be age-appropriately honest with them, preferring they get information from him rather than online. But he’s also trying not to “sugarcoat it too much.”

“I said … this is what we think’s going to happen,” he told co-host Eddie Judge. “This is sort of how we’re going to deal with it, and this is why I’m confident that she’s going to make it through.’”

“Kids are resilient,” he added. “I’ve been very impressed with them. They’ve still been doing great in school [and] in sports. I’ve just tried to keep it consistent with them … [They’re] strong.”

Although Teddi has also been open about her health, she’s studiously avoided the mantra she’s always used with her children: “Mommies always come back.”

“They all know I’m fighting the hardest I possibly can,” she said. “But I haven’t said, ‘Mommies always come back,’ because I don’t wanna lie to them. And I don’t know.”

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on Bravo.
