Today Show’s Savannah Guthrie Reveals ‘Secret’ New NBC Hosting Gig

Someone’s been keeping a big secret! Today Show anchor Savannah Guthrie just revealed that she’s been quietly gearing up to host a new game show for NBC. The news comes just three months after her mom, Nancy Guthrie, vanished without a trace. The case remains ongoing, but clearly, Savannah remains booked and busy.

Just last week, Savannah made headlines after unexpectedly ducking out of the Today show a few segments early. During the Monday, May 11 episode, she was back in the studio with a totally different energy, ready to reveal the big secret she had been sitting on. Jimmy Fallon popped up to help her reveal the news.

“This is very exciting. I have a big announcement to make,” Jimmy began. “We’ve been developing Wordle as a game show for the past two-and-a-half years with The New York Times, and it’s official — we are making Wordle Game Show with our host, Savannah Guthrie!”

“We’ve been holding this secret between us for a long time now,” Savannah added. “And we’re going to make Wordle a game show.”

Yes, they’re reheating Lingo’s nachos, and your pandemic-era obsession is becoming a primetime game show. Jimmy will serve as the executive producer, and he gushed over Savannah’s hosting chops.

Jimmy said, “I’m so happy it’s you. We were looking, we’re like, ‘Who’s the perfect host of this?’ We need to have someone that looks like they play Wordle, someone that knows how to run a show and host it, and we did the pilot, and you are amazing, by the way.”

Savannah also addressed the elephant in the room—the missing persons case involving her mother. She revealed that NBC greenlit the Wordle show during the same month that her mom went missing. The NBC execs decided to press pause on the show until Savannah was ready. Apparently, three months was the magic number.

“We’ve been working on this for a really long time, and actually, we just found out in February that we got picked up and we were supposed to shoot in March,” Savannah explained. “And I just want to say a quick thank you to NBC and to Jimmy and his production company and the New York Times and the studio and Universal because when everything happened with me and my family, they just stopped everything and said ‘We’ll wait for you.’”

She continued, “And Hollywood is a really tough business, and I didn’t expect that, and I just want to say thank you, it means so much to me.”

Savannah will film the Wordle game show this summer, and they’re currently looking for contestants. If you’re one of those people who still has a Wordle streak, here’s your chance to turn it into cash.
