Former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Garcelle Beauvais recently discussed her decision to divorce. She walked away from her marriage to Mike Nilon after discovering he had an affair.
The couple married in May 2001 and divorced in 2011. Their twin sons, Jax and Jaid, were born in 2007.
The former Bravo star it was a “hard decision” to get divorced in her 40s

Garcelle detailed her mindset in ending the marriage at the People Inc. Black Affinity Group’s Legacy Chat series, according to People. “It’s a hard decision to get a divorce when you’re in your 40s,” she noted. “Nobody signs up for that. That’s not something that was something that I wanted to do, but I had to do it because I had to pick me.”
Remaining in the marriage would alter “the very essence” of who she is. “I would be the anxious wife, ‘Where are you? Why are you late? Who’s on the phone?’ ” Garcelle explained. “And I didn’t want to change that. I didn’t want to become that person, and I also didn’t want to raise my boys with that.”
During Season 10 of RHOBH, Garcelle spoke about the affair and finding a text message on Mike’s phone. This revealed a five-year history of cheating. “I really thought this was my last stop,” she said at that time.
She applied these lessons to her friendships. Though she was raised to hold onto friends regardless, she no longer believes in this. “I was brought up that you hold onto friendships no matter what,” she shared during the People Inc. event. “But I think they say a season, a reason, or a lifetime for a specific reason, that some people are just supposed to be for that season.”
Garcelle provided insight on her reason for leaving the Bravo series. “When I sat on that reunion stage and looked around, I felt like I didn’t have any friends,” Beauvais said. “And if the show is based on friendships, I didn’t have any friends on that show anymore. My spirit was no longer there. I couldn’t do it anymore.”
