Survivor 50 has been a wild ride, and host Jeff Probst is promising more surprises in the future. This season gave viewers a cast stacked with some of the best players in the show’s history. Season 50, titled In the Hands of the Fans, featured elements voted on by viewers, including a live finale.
Survivor fans love when the show ends with a live reunion
Five players are heading into the finale. The $2 million prize, doubled from the regular $1 million courtesy of MrBeast, could go to any of these all-stars. Plus, Season 50 introduced new twists, including one named after Jimmy Fallon. When contestant Christian Hubicki failed to complete a puzzle, he had to vote for himself at tribal, leading to his exit from the game.
So, what does Survivor have in store for upcoming seasons? Fans could see more celebrities involved in the future. “It depends on the situation,” Jeff told Variety. “The thing with Zac Brown is that he loves Survivor. He’s never missed an episode. I’m the producer who says, ‘I’m open to all ideas. Let’s try it.'”
The host continued, “Same with Jimmy Fallon. Same with MrBeast. These are all people who said, ‘I’d like to be a part of it.’ So, yeah, in the right situation.” In addition, familiar faces could also make a return, as well as themed seasons. “We know what we’re doing for 51 and 52. That’s it,” Jeff stated.
However, there is one element of the show that will be eliminated. Live finales are not part of Survivor’s future.
“So you get players when they’re pure, and they’re unaffected by the impact of social media in Fiji. When you do a live finale, all you get is defense,” Jeff stated. “The live finale becomes people defending, and for me, from a storytelling standpoint, I never find it as interesting.”
He added, “But I think we’re going to change the format for the finale – make it more of a three-hour event, rather than a two-and-a-half-hour finale and a 30-minute reunion show.”
The Survivor 50 finale takes place on Wednesday, May 20, at 8/7c on CBS.
