Angelina Jolie’s New Movie Role Helped Her Talk to Daughters About This

Angelina Jolie revealed that her latest film role sparked an important conversation with her daughters about breast cancer, genetic risks, and the importance of making informed health decisions. The actress opened up about the experience while attending the Vertical Celebrates “Couture” event at The Whitby Hotel on June 16.

Angelina Jolie shares her role in ‘Couture’ helped her have difficult conversation with daughters

Angelina Jolie explained that playing a filmmaker diagnosed with breast cancer in “Couture” encouraged discussions with her daughters about the BRCA1 gene and the health challenges that can come with it.

“The film itself is going to help me talk to my daughters about it,” Jolie said while speaking with “Hello Mag.” She shared that conversations about the movie naturally led to broader discussions about genetic risks, medical advances, and the importance of not living in fear.

The actress, whose mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died from complications related to ovarian and breast cancer in 2007, said the topic remains deeply personal. Jolie previously revealed that she carried the BRCA1 gene mutation, which significantly increased her risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

In 2013, she underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning her breast cancer risk was as high as 87 percent. Two years later, she also had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as a preventive measure against ovarian cancer.

Jolie said she wants her children to understand that everyone faces challenges in life and that difficult experiences should not be approached with fear. Instead, she believes families should support one another through uncertainty and adversity.

The Oscar winner also reflected on her health journey earlier this year, explaining why she embraces the scars left by her surgeries. Rather than viewing them negatively, Jolie sees them as reminders of the proactive choices she made to stay healthy and remain present for her children.

For Jolie, those decisions represented love, resilience, and a commitment to giving herself the best chance to share more years with her family. Her experience, she said, continues to shape conversations about health, prevention, and strength within her own household.
