A bit of sad news to report today as Teen Mom star Amber Portwood is currently hospitalized after an apparent suicide attempt which is now being confirmed by the Anderson Indiana Police Department.
According to a report by Star magazine via RadarOnline, Amber, 21, was rushed to a hospital emergency room after being found unconscious in her home with a rope around her neck. The just released police report states she “was depressed and threatening to end her life.”
Sources reveal that Amber, who is currently being treated at St. Johns Hospital in Anderson, Indiana, was found this noon and later admitted to hospital staffers that she had taken a cocktail of pills.
Gary Shirley, Amber’s on-off-on-again boyfriend and father of her 2-year-old daughter Leah, was the one who sent his mother to check up on her after he became increasingly concerned about her state of mind following a phone conversation.
Gary’s mom called the cops who ultimately discovered Amber unconscious on a couch. “It’s believed she may have taken an overdose of some kind of pill,” the source reveals. “She also may have tried to tie a piece of rope or string around her neck.”
Star is also reporting that Amber has since regained consciousness and has been stabilized since her admittance to the emergency room.
The timing of this apparent suicide attempt is a bit surprising since Amber just received a light sentence days ago for her domestic violence case involving Gary. A search for Amber’s official twitter page shows it has been deleted though it was still up and running on June 7th.
And just moments ago, Gary made the following tweets which seem to insinuate that Amber’s suicide attempt might have been over him -
“Never cheated on Amber.. She may have thought I did, but haven’t. I will always love and respect her even if we aren’t together.”
“Due to recent events, it was best that Amber delete her Twitter.. Appreciate all those who continue to support.”
TELL US – THOUGHTS?

Bravo MTV. Looks like you have really been helping these mom’s out a lot.
what a selfish little girl…she has a daughter she was going to leave behind
@Layla, I have the same thoughts exactly. They need to realize that they are dealing with peoples lives here. Not ratings.
i hope that this is not some scripted act to get more camera time. if real, i hope she gets the help she needs.
Sad all around. I peshe gets some help and realizes nothing is worth giving your life over. MTV needs to pull the plug onthis show!
*hope she
This is a damn shame….a wake up call to Morgan Freeman….you are NOT helping these young moms!
I just feel like the whole premise behind this show is lost to this network, when it shows Jersey Shore and a number of other shows that promote binge drinking and promiscuity. There’s just no point to keeping it on the air, or at least on this channel.
This is too much life for these girls to take in all at once, new moms, money, fame …. we knew one day something like this would happend. I pray that she recovers, gets help and realizes that life is about her child not some man and things she can’t change.
This is incredibly sad for all involved. Thank goodness the police got there when they did. I cannot imagine how hard this must be for their familes & I hope Amber is able to get the help she needs, even if she doesn’t want it then I hope she does it for sweet little Leah’s sake.
@Layla & Cleveland girl- I could not agree more. I wouldn’t be surprised if instead of caring about Amber’s health & safety right now, MTV is trying to figure out how they can profit off this & even make it part of the show. I would not put it past them, especially in regards to this series and all the violence/abuse they have shown in the past.
I will be praying for Amber and her family during this painful time & wishing her nothing but peace and happiness with herself & those close to her!!
Don’t blame MTV on this. This woman would have had these problems whether she was a reality star or not. In fact, in some ways, the show may be a mixed blessing. Not only is her behavior getting a lot of attention (that may otherwise be ignored by family members in denial), the video evidence was damning. If Gary had just walked into the police dept and said he was abused by her, without the lack of evidence, how do you think they would have reacted? They probably would have laughed at him. If anything, this show may be what saves poor Leah from continuing the cycle.
Secondly, mental health care is expensive. The money she makes off this show is what pays for her medication (which I’d be willing to bet she stopped taking, grrr). And aside from stupid Dr. Drew, she now has access to some real doctors who can really help her.
They need to pull her off the show already, yes I agree with that. But not become the SHOW did this to her, but because she has some severe issues that need to be treated. She’s bipolar, and often bipolar does not appear until the late teens/early 20s. It often is a shock to the person and their family because it seems to literally strike (and get worse) out of nowhere.
Yes, MTV is in it for the ratings. But there are some positive effects from this show, even if they are simply accidental side effects. If it wasn’t for this show poor Leah would just be a nameless, faceless statistic in this world no would know about or possibly care about.
@ 2 i dont think she was being selfish…she probably was just overwhelmed and when you get like that nothing else seems to matter she prob felt leah would be better off without her (which isnt true) ..depression and sucide are very serious things and once they get in your head its hard to think logically about anything…ive experienced it myself and its not a joke nor is it an easy thing to overcome
@7 holy smokes! i seen morgan freeman on the credits but i didnt know it was the same morgan freeman from lean on me…wtf thats a odd thing for him to produced..im genuwinely surprised!
she always was a nutter, glad she can get some proper help now. she is a bad mum and a nagging selfish whingy gf
I don’t see MTV being completely to blame, but I think it’s definitely a factor.
@13
Morgan J. Freeman is not the same person as Morgan Freeman
And I agree with what you said about mental illness. It’s not that she’s being selfish, she’s just not being logical about it, period.
Her life and her daughter’s life are now truly going to be changed forever. From here and out everyone is going to worry about Leah’s safety on a whole new level. But I’m glad Amber is okay and I hope she ends up seeing better times.
@11 Calexi- How do you know she is bipolar?? I have never read/heard that before. The reason I ask is because I pay SERIOUS attention to that topic because I am bipolar (I was diagnosed almost 10 years ago when I was 18 yrs. old). So I was wondering where you heard that she was bipolar from?? Or are you just speculating that you think she is bipolar because of how she acts on the show & now this- I hope that is not the case & you are assuming that because she acts violent/crazy at times that means she must be bipolar.
Katrina, chill now. It seems you are doing a little speculation of your own.
Gary has stated before she is bipolar in the media. It was awhile ago. She takes (or is supposed) to take medication for it. It has been been mentioned on the show several times she takes meds for her mental issues (namely depression) so some of it may be related to a combination of issues not related to her bipolar disorder.
Even if I didn’t know she was bipolar, the main point still stands….the violence and crazy behavior are symptoms of some sort of mental issue she needs professional help with. I realize not all bipolar folks are violent, but the extreme highs and lows are telltale signs something abnormal is going on.
@18- I wasn’t jumping on you(sorry if it sounded that way)- I just wanted to clarify since I had never heard bipolar discussed, only depression. Because of the media’s portrayal of some celebrities with bipolar, people assume that if you do something extreme you must be bipolar and that everyone with bipolar is off-their-rocker.
I completely agree with you in regards to needing serious professional help to help deal with her issues. I hope she makes the right decision for her (&her daughter) and decides to leave the show to seek help.
Again, I am sorry if I came off sound attacking- I didn’t mean it that way. This is just a sensitive topic for me and usually people make ridiculous assumptions & statements about bipolar without checking their facts first.
I’m sure it is hard for her to stop doing the show, because MTV wants her and they keep offering good money and it is hard to refuse even when clearly she needs major help. If this doesn’t prove it to MTV, what would?
Katrina, it’s all good hon
*hugs*
You’re right because a lot of people just assume any irate behavior is automatically bipolar disorder, just like many assume anti-social behavior is always due to autism.
My best friend in college ended up being bipolar, and she never had a violent bone in her body. I was there when it all started to happen, as I was really hurt by some of the things she said to me, not to mention confused. But I never felt physically threatened, and now she feels better and we’re friends again
Honestly, I think Amber has a lot of issues going on, some of which seem to be related to the environment she grew up in (that’s a bit of a guess, but there are clues from the show). I don’t think it is all just one thing with her.
She needs to be removed from this show so she can step out of the limelight. She can’t handle it anymore and her life is at risk. This is so very sad.
Someone called her selfish. You’re right. Suicide is a very selfish act. But until you’ve been in that dark place your mind goes where you don’t think anything will ever get better, you shouldn’t judge. Mental illness is real, and comments like that, the mocking, is really unnecessary. She has needed help since Leah was born and unfortunately hasn’t been pointed in the right direction. I hope that someone will finally take this girl seriously and get her the help she deserves. If for nothing else, for Leah.
ma dear these bravo shows are sad beacuse they all appluad bad behavior and teaching generations to come nothing . grown women drinking smoking cusing dress up their but and they even stoop to having their kids all in the mix around the mess just for the money and even grown kids there is no excuss for this and i guess the pope is wondering , what is happing to the ITAILAIN CHRISTIN FAITH BELIVERS
Here the thing with the teen mom series all this girls have some issues. The camera does n
Camera does not help at all the girls should get counselor and parent classes instead of MTV gaving them a huge check. amber need help and MTV need to stop film and get amber some serious help not that idiot dr drew
Calexi: I agree with you… MTV is not to blame for this girl’s issues. She had them long before MTV came along and they will be there long after the cameras stop rolling. Because of MTV, Leah may have a shot at a better future because people will actually pay attention now and she won’t just be another statistic.
The Superficial.com said it best: “Okay, now we can start pretending we’re shocked that Amber would selfishly leave a small child without a mother even though nobody thinks this isn’t the greatest gift she could’ve given her daughter short of tampering with the DNA test that proves Gary Shirley is her father.”
unstable children having children should not be fodder for viewership. never watched this show and never will. what chance do these newborns have?….i watch crap out of boredom…but this is way too low brow and potentially deadly to it’s participants.
my heart goes out to Amber 100% i hope she gets the help she needs and looks at the whole picture. Our children need us more than we can even understand.
MTV pull the plug on this show, please!!! Stop glamorizing these young women, they are not to be looked up to by any means by our youth. Enough is enough, WTF!!!!
How can one blame MTV for a person who exhibited unstable behavior pretty much the minute she stepped on camera?
Isn’t it time Amber started taking responsibility for her actions?
Nobody held a gun to her head and told her to continue filming.
MTV sold out hard core. Can’t we just get rid of it. They should have never had their “I want my MTV” campaigni in the 80s
MTV created the show and sought out these types of girls, had they not, then these little girls wouldn’t have lined up hoping for a shot at “stardom”
@Amy, yes, had MTV not created this show and sought out these types of girls, they would not be lining up for a shot a “stardom” – they would be collecting welfare checks and beating their baby daddy’s and verbally abusing their kids in the privacy of their own homes… safe from our eyes so we can continue to live in ignorant bliss that this sad underbelly of society doesn’t exist. MTV is just showing what goes on everyday with thousands of young parents in our country. If you want to blame anyone for glamourizing things, it’s the reality websites and tabloid magazines.
i really hope that amber gets helps so she can be here for her daughter
@blech, I am completely in agreement w/ you.. If I may add .. I read elsewhere her family has as well placed the blame on gary’s
And his family .. Her problem were pre-existing before she CHOOSE to do this program and display herself .she easily could have declined …
Wish the best for Amber and her family….very sad to hear this news.
Hey #17, read this:
http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20502981,00.html
She said herself in an interview she is bipolar.
Love people letting MTV off the hook. Are you serious that the producers didn’t know she had some personality (if not mental problems) when they interviewed her for the show. They are making money off exploiting minors, throwing girls (not women) that are already troubled into a situation where they kids know that drama gets ratings, It’s not like the housewives or something that are adults and have a little more (sometimes very little) common sense. Hey MTV what next. I heard there is a few recovering alcoholics down the street. Lets put them in a high stress situation and make alcohol available to them….great show idea huh? Did the bimbo have a problem before, obviously. Should MTV own up to their part of the responsibility, YES!
@DA Patrol You are 100% right! I wanna quote everything you said because it is ALL right.. WIthout the show they’d be living on welfare and doing waaaay worse, and MTV is just showing all teenagers what happens when you have a kid. It probably saved 50% of them from doing it because they actually get to see what happens and get to choose if thats what they want! THank the media, wesites and tabloids, for faming them. Don’t hate MTV!
I am thrilled to read others on here have the same thoughts about good ol’ Amber!! DA Patrol couldn’t have said it better. Look, kids having kids is a bad recipe no matter what kind of mental issues they have. Their brains are not even developed to have a normal relationship at that age, much less have any good common sense. HOWEVER, Amber has been almost forced into taking a look at how shitty she is as a mother and a person and she STILL never got it through that thick head that SHE was the one in the wrong. She yelled at Gary that HE GOT HER pregnant and ruined her life? She blames her terrible attitude on everyone and everything but her own actions. She cusses like a sailor in front of her kid and yells at Gary for asking her to watch her mouth in front of Leah? Call me what you want to, but I have NOT AN OUNCE OF SYMPATHY FOR THIS WASTE OF SPACE. I truly feel for that poor child of theirs because she is damned to a life of chaos and misery. Amber should have finished what she started and gave her daughter a fighting chance. And yes I know, that is aweful for me to say that about a “poor sick little girl who has mental issues” but she tossed any sympathy for her out the door the day she had that little girl and refused to change for the better and act like a mom. Amber is the lowest trash out there and has NO remorse for anything she has ever said or done and she never will. She’s a constant VICTIM in her own eyes and I hate those people. period.
How is MTV to be blamed for these girls actions. MTV is putting america on blast, that’s all. This does not just happen on TV PEOPLE. This is happening everyday more than you know.. People are always ready to criticize, I didn’t read any of you trying to reach out to help one of these girls OF course NOT because you go on with your life you judge, and then you hide what your children are probably doing loll and point fingers. I applaud these girls for being TRUE and brave enough to share there lives with the rest of us for OUR children and OUR future generations can make wiser choices… I don’t see Obama or Michelle trying to speak to these ladies to better there lives or I don’t see them getting on MTV to speak about these kind of everyday living issues that happen around the world… Know of course not but when he was running for president he sure had a lot to say on MTV… or maybe it’s easier for the president and his lady to stay premiering on Disney where all the YOUNG stars of disney turn into MT’V REALITY SHOWS…
it isnt MTVs fault these women choose to be on this show.
they can stop at anytime, just like a normal job.
it is quite selfish that she tried to do this i agree with that.
