Shep Rose Says Kathryn Dennis Had A Second Off-Camera Emotional Breakdown While Filming Southern Charm

On the last season of Southern Charm, we saw a Kathryn Dennis who seemed to be getting herself together. She had more court ordered time with her children, appeared to be maintaining her sobriety and was thinking before acting. Which for Kathryn, was a huge accomplishment. She even calmly deflected arrows shot at her by the appalling Ashley Jacobs, the new girlfriend of her ex Thomas Ravenel.

On this season of Southern Charm, Kathryn appears to be reverting back to some of her old bad habits. She has seemed less responsible, more secretive and volatile. Her co-stars have been concerned about her spending large amounts of money on rent and a Rolls Royce. And friend Shep Rose recently revealed that the meltdown Kathryn had at Craig Conover’s pillow party wasn’t her only breakdown at the time.

Shep told People Now that Kathryn had a second incident off-camera, and that he was “very worried” about her at the time. He shared, “She’s going through a lot, and sometimes you forget all the things she’s going through. But, as I tell her, I don’t know what you’re going through ’cause you don’t tell me.”

If Kathryn didn’t tell Shep what was going on, it is not like he is a mind reader–or even has very good social skills, so he would probably not pick up on any clues she might have given off. Shep has not always been supportive of co-stars like Craig and Austen Kroll, but he has generally had a good relationship with Kathryn.

Apparently, Kathryn was sending out confusing signals to her co-stars during filming. Shep explained, “In friendship, you have to meet someone halfway, and I hope she’s learning that lesson, because she internalizes all this, and then it explodes, and [she] expects us to understand, and we just don’t know.”

Of course, Kathryn has more to contend with than most women her age. She has been battling Thomas in court over custody of their two children for years. Plus, she is dealing with the fall out after his arrest on assault charges. And Kathryn has been open about her substance abuse and mental health issues.

Shep says that he got together with Kathryn for breakfast at the time to get her to talk about what was going on. He said, “I’m glad we did that. She doesn’t reach out to anybody–maybe Danni [Baird], some.” Of course, this season, Kathryn’s relationship with Danni has been strained, so she could have been feeling isolated from her co-stars.

Despite the difficulty in communicating with Kathryn, Shep tries to stand by her. He stated, “If I see her, I feel very protective of her. ‘Let’s go sit down and let’s talk.’ That’s how I am…I think I put her at ease, ’cause I turn everything into a joke and she likes to laugh, so I might not be the best shoulder to cry on, but I’m like Patch Adams, or someone, you know. Laughter is the best medicine, you know?”

We will find out how Kathryn and the rest of the Southern Charm crew fare over the rest of the season. It was great to see Kathryn on a better path last year and let’s hope that it continues after some bumps in the road at the start of the season.
