Captain Sandy Yawn has faced many challenges in her time as a Captain on Below Deck Mediterranean. Unruly guests. Unpredictable weather. A chef who considered canned food haute cuisine. Crew members who sometimes want to do anything but the job they were hired on to do. Being away from home for weeks at a time might be the most difficult part of her job, however.
Despite her hectic schedule, Sandy shared with her fans earlier this year that she had found love. Sandy met gospel singer Leah Shafer on Facebook and the two quickly became a couple. Since then, Sandy’s Instagram has been filled with photos of the two looking very happy together. Sandy even moved to Denver to be with Leah. Sadly, Sandy has announced that the couple is now facing a major challenge in their life–Leah has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Sandy recently tweeted, “Hi all, not the news we were hoping for. We are ever so grateful for and overwhelmed with all your prayers and well wishes. We love you all so much. Know that we are strengthened by the outpouring of love and that we remain extremely positive for the future.”
One of the benefits of social media is that people are able to reach out to support and comfort each other in difficult times. It is great to see that this is the case for Sandy and Leah.
In a second message on Twitter, Sandy shared, “Together we are stronger, especially with all of your good thoughts coming our way. We caught this early thank GOD. So Leah doesn’t have to go through this again, Leah has chosen to have a double mastectomy and reconstruction. We’re in the process of searching for top surgeons now.”
Unfortunately for the couple, the timing of Leah’s diagnosis is an added stressor for them. Sandy explained, “We will adjust to our new normal. We will come out strong. It’s going to be hard being apart for 7 weeks, but our love is the real deal, and I will come right home to Leah in Denver after work travel.”
Being apart at a time like this must be extremely challenging for the couple. Although there is no confirmation, it sounds like Sandy might filming the new season of Below Deck Mediterranean. The show started filming around the same time last year and the time frame of her absence sounds about right. If that is the case, maybe co-stars like Hannah Ferrier and Joao Franco will be back on board to help support Sandy.
Despite Leah’s health issues and Sandy needing to be away for work, she is remaining positive. Sandy tweeted, “It’s through these times we really rely on FAITH and realize how amazing our love is~Much Love to you all! And, whatever helps women be proactive, post it!”

I am sure all of the Below Deck and Below Deck Mediterranean fans, myself included, wish for a quick recovery for Leah. Having a strong, positive person like Sandy in her corner surely makes a world of difference.
