The dynamics between Below Deck stars Harry van Vliet and Captain Jason Chambers are beyond entertaining and supportive this season on Below Deck Down Under. As Season 3 airs, their positive interactions are the one consistent thing we can all count on. When Harry messes up, Captain Jason is there to help him grow. And when Harry needs a dad-like figure, Captain Jason, a man many would like to call daddy, is the first to arrive, complete with advice, an encouraging nod, and even borrowed outfits as needed.
Returning yachties make the world of Below Deck go round. In each series, the captains typically remain the same. At their side, at least one familiar face also appears, lending a sense of familiarity for each new season. For this reason, alongside several others, we hope to see Harry back on BDDU for many additional seasons on Bravo.
When Aesha Scott left Below Deck Down Under, it left a Harry van Vliet-sized sidekick hole for Captain Jason Chambers

During Seasons 1 and 2 of BDDU, Aesha Scott stood at the side of Captain Jason. Her presence saw us tuning into this new spin-off series, as her past showings in this franchise made many viewers fall head over heels in love with her goofy self. Second stewardess Aesha joined the Below Deck franchise via Below Deck Mediterranean Seasons 4 and 5. Then, Aesha jumped over to BDDU to tackle the Chief Stew position before returning to BDM in Season 9.
In Season 2 of BDDU, Harry signed on to filming, quickly bonding with another newbie, Chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph. After this rather dark season aired, Aesha, through no correlation to the storylines within Season 2, left BDDU. Therefore, when BDDU Season 3 kicked off, one less returning yachtie was on board. However, production did boomerang back Tzarina and Harry, who are currently (mostly) nailing their roles on BDDU Season 3.
Aesha and Captain Jason were as thick as thieves. Their scenes were comical and endearing, bringing lightness to this series. When her exit sounded, many wondered how BDDU might fare without their sidelined storylines and banters. Cue Harry, who has since grown quite close to Captain Jason, as their scenes this season are proving on Bravo.
Now that Harry has filled this hole, this series needs his presence for as long as Harry is able. Fans deserve nice, lighthearted scenes on BDDU. And Captain Jason deserves a workplace that includes the presence of his new bestie, Harry.
Captain Jason Chambers wants to see Harry van Vliet grow in his career on BDDU

In Season 2 of BDDU, Harry entered as a deckhand. Season 3 is now airing, showing Harry getting his coins via a promotion to the lead deckhand role. When Harry received his career upgrade in Episode 13, he took to his confessional, exclaiming, I’m excited. Finally, I can prove to myself [and] to Jason that I’ve got what it takes, that I can do this job.”
In his confessional, Captain Jason stressed, “Harry’s worked very hard to be a lead deckhand, but the work is not over. Up until now, [Harry] has only had to worry about himself. Now he’s got to worry about a whole team. I’m excited to see where this is going.”
However, Harry made his first mistake shortly after his promotion. To explain, Nicolas Cattelan is green but eager to learn. Therefore, Harry took an opportunity to train Nic during an anchor drop, teaching him how to work the chains. Harry supervised Nic as he lowered and secured the anchor, giving this activity so much of his presence that he failed to hear and respond to Captain Jason on the radio.
Then, Harry and Nic turned their backs on the anchor as it broke loose, sending them racing to secure the chains. After these missteps, Captain Jason and Harry shared a joint confessional, something that has never been done before on Below Deck. Here, Captain Jason took his errors in stride, hoping to help Harry grow in his career.
The dynamics between Captain Jason Chambers and Harry van Vliet are perfect for Below Deck Down Under

When Harry made his first mistake as a lead deckhand, Captain Jason pulled him into the wheelhouse for a chat. As Harry explained how his hands were so busy with Nic that he dropped the ball on everything else, Captain Jason smirked, responding with sarcasm that made Harry, and in turn, Captain Jason, laugh. Harry was off the hook. But better yet, Harry had just learned a valuable lesson from his wise captain in a way that felt supportive and kind with a touch of humor.
Captain Jason and Harry have a strong bond, almost like that of a (non-toxic) father and his son. We already covered how Captain Jason guides Harry with firm, kind guidance in his professional endeavors. Now, let us look at how Captain Jason also supports his lead deckhand with his emotional plights, as seen during Season 3.
Harry and Brianna Duffield are currently enjoying a cute boatmance on BDDU. As Harry prepped for their first date, Captain Jason pulled up with an assist, lending Harry one of his outfits for this special occasion. After the boys cheekily argued in the crew mess over the color of one of his shirts, Harry was off to enjoy his evening, looking fresh to death. In his confessional, Captain Jason joked, “It’s what dads are for, you know?”
Captain Jason and Harry are an iconic duo. Hopefully, Bravo also thinks this, therefore keeping Harry on BDDU for as long as Harry is willing.
Below Deck Down Under is streaming on Peacock and Hayu in the UK and Ireland.
