Scheana Shay has been known to insert herself into many situations. Scandoval for one. But the former Vanderpump Rules star made it a rule not to comment about politics. However, in regards to her newfound connection with her Mexican heritage, Scheana felt it was time to speak out.
The Valley former cast member revealed the conflict she felt growing up as a member of the Latin community in her new book, My Good Side. She referenced having an “imposter syndrome” of sorts as a child. As a mother to daughter Summer Moon, Scheana is now embracing all aspects of her and husband, Brock Davies,‘ roots.
Scheana Shay recognizes the “challenges and racism that the Latin community faces”
In honor of Latine Heritage Month, BuzzFeed interviewed Scheana as part of their series called Legends & Luminaries. Scheana was asked to describe her “relationship” with her “heritage” as an adult, and a mother.
She recalled having not “always been comfortable talking about my Latin heritage.” Far from being “embarrassed or ashamed.” The reality TV star felt unsure how to reconcile having a biological father versus a father figure. Scheana “hid that part of my life.” She didn’t have an active connection to her Mexican roots.
Now that she has a family of her own, Scheana is revisiting her sense of identity. And it goes beyond the household now. She commented on the turmoil within the Latin community regarding ICE detention and deportations. Until now, the VPR alum avoided politics for fear of “saying the wrong thing.”
“I feel like that’s just something I’ve struggled with. I never want to be seen as just taking advantage of the positive parts of this community — you know, like this opportunity before me right now — while not having to deal with the challenges that this community faces in America. What we are going through right now is so crazy,” Scheana commented.
She continued, “But I feel like the challenges and racism that the Latin community faces, especially in the heightened more recent times, with everything with ICE, it’s not even a political issue at this point. It’s a human issue. I have heard so many stories of people just being ripped apart from their families, and it’s not okay. People being targeted because of their skin color, their language, the music they listen to, their job … it’s just … it’s all wrong.”
