If you blinked, you might have missed Barbara Kavovit’s short run on the Real Housewives of New York during Season 11. She came in as a friend of Luann de Lesseps, which didn’t last long once she started bashing the Countess by saying she couldn’t sing. Some would argue that’s exactly what real friends are for. However, when it comes to Lu and her cabaret, getting in the middle of that is a death sentence for any friendship. Since then, Lu’s best friend has been Jovani, with Ramona Singer coming in a not-so-close second.
Barb The Builder wasn’t the best fit for RHONY, considering she really didn’t get too involved in the drama. Also, she didn’t really have the most natural chemistry with the ladies, particularly Sonja Morgan and Dorinda Medley. Following her short reality TV run, Barb made a run at becoming the mayor of New York City. However, she dropped out of the race, showing that Miss Morgan’s voting power might carry more weight than everyone thought.
Woe is the current season of the Real Housewives of New York. The fans have made it very clear that Season 13 was NOT it. Leah McSweeney isn’t having the best season by a longshot, and the fans aren’t afraid to let her know it. There are mixed feelings about newbie Eboni K. Williams bringing issues of race to the forefront. And frankly, Ramona Singer, Luann de Lesseps and Sonja Morgan are having their same old storylines, but without all the usual goofiness. It’s clear a change is needed, starting with adding more people to the group.
In the midst of poor ratings for RHONY, a bunch of rumors have emerged. The origin of the rumors is mysterious — is that you, Elyse Slaine? Or maybe Harry Dubin is trying to cause drama between his circle of ex-lovers. There was word the filming for the reunion is on hold and a cast shake-up is imminent. And there have been whispers that the Ramonacoaster might be coming to a full and final halt, after 13 seasons. Many fans were outraged — Ramona can be problematic and a bit of a mess, but she’s been instrumental to RHONY since the beginning. Literally, there’s no one else who would poop on the floor, eat dog food, and accidentally Instagram their bank statement except for Miss Mona.
Bershan Shaw took things to the next level on last week’s episode of Real Housewives of New York. She set her sighs on ALL of the women, and didn’t hold back. In particular, it was Sonja Morgan on the biggest receiving end of Bershan’s new attitude. She was called a clown and repeatedly mimicked by the New York newbie. This is already rubbing everyone the wrong way. Nobody knows Bershan like that to take this type verbal lashing from her.
Bershan’s walking a fine line because she’s risking getting iced out. These women don’t know her that well, and she’s already pissed them off. If she doesn’t back down a bit, they might do whatever they can to further alienate her. It was clear at the dinner she was just spewing whatever she could to get a reaction. Some of it was factual, but none of it landed the way she wanted. Now, she has a target on her back, and tensions are dangerously high.
At this point, I’m ready for Season 13 of the Real Housewives of New York to be over already. And it honestly makes me sad as hell to say that. RHONY used to bring reliable entertainment year after year. I never get tired of Sonja Morgan and Ramona Singer’s Thing One and Thing Two antics. I loved the mess that was Tinsley Mortimer, particularly when Dale Mercer was involved. Before Bethenny Frankel started bashing Bravo, she was the Queen B. But this year, it’s just a bust.
RHONY has gone through a major shift in the past year, much of it due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eboni K. Williams’ entrance as the first Black cast member has brought conversations about racism and white privilege to the forefront. Luann de Lesseps is past her days of falling in bushes and sleeping with pirates, opting for yoga and alcohol-free rose instead. And the majority of scenes in Season 13 fluctuate from being dark and gloomy to downright boring. Although she came in hot, Bershan Shaw had a point when she called them a bunch of “boring grandmas.”
Every Real Housewives of New York fan can clearly see that this season is a total bust. And while everyone is trying to point the finger at one person or thing to blame it on, I don’t think it’s that simple. The ladies are dealing with the coronavirus pandemic which hit NYC especially hard. And they filmed the majority of the season amidst one of the most contentious presidential elections of all time that had everyone on edge. Not to mention a national reckoning regarding racism. Also, at least half of the ladies are going through serious personal issues behind the scenes that are taking their toll on them.
Behind the RHONY seems, it sounds like Bravo is worried about the fan response to this season. The addition of Eboni K. Williams has been heavily debated, with some praising her for making the women confront their white privilege and others (AKA Ramona Singer) thinking she’s too “preachy.” And while Leah McSweeney was a fan-favorite last year, the fans have turned on her so bad that even Mona is asking them to give her a break. Sounds like Leah is a victim of the sophomore season scaries.
Okay, what in the actual hell is happening on Real Housewives of New York? The ratings have fallen faster than Luann de Lesseps’ last marriage, and that’s saying something because she was Mrs. D ‘Agostino for approximately 5 minutes. Eboni K. Williams was highly touted as the new woman on the scene and the first Black cast member, which was supposed to be a compliment to diversity but wound up being an exercise in failure.
Leah McSweeney has been riding the wave of the sophomore curse and may or may not be sinking the boat. The jury is still out on whether or not Leah is an asset or just a complete ass as she navigates a fine line between being woke and plain annoying. Now we’re hearing Ramona Singer is fired, which made Bethenny Frankel smile for the first time in 15 years. Today we receive news that the reunion is on hold, Andy Cohen is having a freak out, and something in the milk definitely ain’t clean in New York.
Snooze. Bored. Those are two words that come to mind to describe this season of The Real Housewives of New York. It feels like nothing has happened this season. The only thing to note is the weekly educational lesson we get from Eboni K. Williams. These women are on a trip to Salem, and it feels like a dark spell has been cast on us. This isn’t the show we know and love. This is a shell of what it used to be. Something needs to happen to liven this season up.
Bershan Shaw has been a pleasant addition so far. It’s not enough though. Something needs to change because this is NOT it. Fans have turned on Leah McSweeney. People seemingly blame her for being part of the downfall. However, can this really be attributed to one person? Dropping Leah or firing long time cast member Ramona Singer is not the way to approach this. Maybe the Salem trip will take a turn and not feel like watching school on TV.
Ramona Singer is a gem of a housewife. Bravo couldn’t have anticipated just how good their casting was when she was hired for the premiere of Real Housewives of New York. Ramona has entertained us for thirteen seasons with her quirkiness and complete lack of self-awareness. Longtime friends Luann de Lesseps, Sonja Morgan, and Dorinda Medley just accept Ramona for who she is, and side-step the Singer stinger moments. Season 13 newbie Eboni K. Williams has managed to wrangle Ramona in on several occasions in a most magnificent way. But Ramona will always be….Ramona.
Her crazy moments are many. How about that Season 3 catwalk? Or her “Wow Bethenny [Frankel]” confrontation? Then there was a disastrous speech for the New York Loves Kids event when she couldn’t pronounce her host’s name. So we know that Ramona often puts her foot in her mouth. But dog food?
