Tom Girardi’s Fraud Trial Set for May 2024

Tom Girardi has seen better days. It’s hard to believe Tom once had his name in the credits of a major motion picture for his consultation on Erin Brockovich. From there, many knew him for his ties to Erika Jayne and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

Unfortunately, the public image of Erika’s now-estranged husband would suffer a nosedive when allegations of wire fraud started popping up. If true, Tom illegally pocketed over $18 million from clients.

In July 2022, he was disbarred, and since then, 205 complaints have come into the State Bar of California alleging Tom’s misappropriation of settlement money, among other ethical violations. Of course, Tom is innocent until proven guilty, and now, he has a trial date.

Tom Girardi has four months to prepare for his trial

The Los Angeles Daily News reported on January 10 that Tom’s trial date would be set for May 21, 2024. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, U.S. District Judge Josephine Staton granted the prosecution’s request for a May trial, not only for Tom but for Chris Kamon as well. Chris is the former CFO of Tom’s former law firm.

The defense attempted to push the trial to February 2025 but with no success. Tom did not attend yesterday’s hearing. As of right now, Tom is free on a $250,000 bond and living in the memory ward of an Orange County nursing home. Kamon, meanwhile, is in federal custody while he awaits trial.

Those who have been keeping up with Tom’s courtroom updates likely already knew Judge Staton’s name as she was the one who declared Tom competent enough to stand trial. Despite the defense’s efforts to play up Tom’s mild-to-moderate cognitive impairment, Judge Staton was unmoving, showing Tom and Chris next to no leeway.

Meanwhile, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills continues Wednesdays at 8/7c on Bravo.
