Dolores Catania was brought onto Real Housewives of New Jersey as OG Teresa Giudice’s friend. And she came at a time when Tre desperately needed real allies. The show may belong to Teresa but over the years, she finds herself more and more embattled with her family. So Teresa needed a true friend. And Dolores, who has known her since childhood, was happy to be just that.
But this season, Dolores really started to branch out with the rest of the cast. She formed new friendships and those included castmates that weren’t exactly Teresa approved. So the writing was on the wall that things might not be so great between the longtime friends. Despite Dolores never saying anything against Teresa, one simple action had Tre turning on her.
As reported by Reality Tea, Margaret Josephs dished about how her fight with Teresa in Nashville caused a rift between Tre and Dolores. On an episode of the Behind The Velvet Rope podcast, Marge responded to the fact that Dolores stayed behind to comfort her after Tre tossed food and drinks on her. Which Tre labeled “disloyal.”
Said Margaret, “That is the dumbest thing I think I’ve ever heard. Dolores has been nothing but loyal to Teresa. That’s just ridiculous. Because I mean, Dolores is the most loyal good friend to everybody.” She added, “You could be a good friend to someone and not agree with what they do. And what Teresa did that day was, no one could.”
But it sounded like trouble was brewing even before Marge ended up on the receiving end of Tre’s flip out. Back when Teresa was on Real Housewives of Ultimate Girls Trip, she told her castmates that no one has ever had her back on RHONJ. Dolores responded with understandable hurt. She said of the comment, “No, I don’t agree with that. And I feel bad she said it. Yeah, I feel I have [had Teresa’s back]. I’ve gotten a lot of slack for it at times, but I don’t mind doing it. She’s my friend.”
That’s Dolores in a nutshell – even when she’s hurt, she’s still sticking by her friend. But Tre clearly doesn’t see it that way. After her fight with Marge, Tre was adamant that Dolores made a mistake by staying with Marge. Tre complained, “[Dolores] wanted to come after me and then she didn’t because Margaret told her not to. Right there, loyalty was broken. Because why did she listen to Margaret?”
We all know that Teresa demands blind loyalty and Dolores has given her just that. But maybe Dolores has had enough. Or maybe she just wants to exist on the show without having to be Tre’s accomplice all the time. It looks like Jennifer Aydin has stepped up nicely into that role.
Either way, the revelation that Dolores wasn’t invited to Tre’s engagement party certainly doesn’t bode well for the state of their friendship. It’s hard to have someone’s back when they don’t even want you to sit at their table.
