Kyle Richards Defends Mauricio Umansky Skipping Celebration of Life Event

Content warning: brief mention of suicide.

When Mauricio Umansky didn’t attend a special event with his wife, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards, eyebrows were raised. Kyle hosted an event with the National Alliance on Mental Illness to honor her best friend, Lorene Shea. Tragically, in May 2022, Lorene took her own life.

Some of Kyle’s RHOBH co-stars had some thoughts on the matter. “I’m not accepting the excuse that Mo is giving,” Sutton Stracke said in a confessional scene. “Unless you are in the hospital, or dead in a ditch, you show up for your wife, and your wife’s dead, best friend’s family.”

Kyle did share her feelings about Mauricio missing the Celebration of Life event. In her confessional, she said, “Mo can’t be here because he had to go out of town for business. Had this been a few years ago, I would have really relied on him on a night like tonight.”

Kyle defends Mauricio: She gave him her blessing to miss the event

Now viewers are getting more details about Kyle’s feelings about the situation. US Weekly reported that Kyle shared some details via her Instagram Stories. She wrote, “I want to clarify this … I did many times but then I guess I need to again. Moe offered to cancel his trip multiple times.” She added, “Even though there were many people involved in this trip. I told him he did not need to do that. The date of the event was changed last minute and none of the other men were attending.”

Kyle added, “I had a lot of support around me that night. It’s not fair to put that on him.”

She included a clip from a recent episode of RHOBH: After Show. In the clip, Sutton and Garcelle Beauvais chatted about Mauricio’s absence. Even if dates shifted, it wasn’t a good look.

“He was out of town,” Kyle told Erika Jayne. “You know, he also loved Lorene, he really did, and she loved him so much,” she said. “It genuinely was not his fault at all. He would’ve been there for her and for me [if he was in town].”

Although Kyle and Mauricio hadn’t yet separated when the show was filmed, there was tension between them. I’m not sure if Kyle’s excuses cast Mauricio in a better light.
