Captain Sandy Yawn has been the branded as the most intense of all micromanagers. The Below Deck Mediterranean captain has a habit of inserting herself into any crew drama, and therefore into more camera time as well.
Maybe Sandy does this because she thinks it makes her a good leader. Certainly it’s a management style, but Captain Lee Rosbach can run a tight ship without watching over each dinner service or assigning cabins. So it could just for her own benefit that Sandy waltzes on screen at any opportunity, especially to the galley.
Raise the anchor because it’s reunion time, yachties! The entire Below Deck Mediterranean crew is back and dressed in their best whites to hash out a season’s worth of drama on the high seas. Well, most of them, anyway. And just like most Bravo reunions these days, this year’s proceedings will be entirely virtual. Though this time around, the decision is just as likely to be about logistics, what with the entire cast spread out around the world.
Captain Sandy Yawn seems to be only one landlocked, stuck at her apartment in Colorado with the protective foam corners still stuck on the frame of the artwork behind her head. Meanwhile, Hannah Ferrier is eight months pregnant in Australia, where she filmed the reunion at four a.m. The rest of the crew is scattered everywhere from London (Malia White) and Long Island (Alex Radcliffe, who’s blessedly shirtless in the opening montage) to the islands of the Bahamas (Bugsy Drake) and Martinique (Kiko Lorran). Meanwhile Rob Westergaard and Jessica More are both in Florida, but definitely not together.
This season of Below Deck Mediterranean should have been inspiring. We should have been watching females in lead positions, running a boat efficiently, and not taking any crap. What we received was a sneaky bosun, a micro-managing captain, and a racist deckhand. Captain Sandy Yawn made some executive decisions and as a result, fans made some decisions of their own.
Hannah Ferrier is currently living her best life. Pregnant with a baby girl, Hannah has somewhat retired from the world of yachting. But the way she went out felt, I don’t know, kind of underhanded. Hannah was fired for having undeclared meds onboard, in the form of a Valium Rx and CBD pen. Viewers had a lot of feelings regarding Hannah’s termination and Captain Sandy has not been on the receiving end of good press. Now Sandy shares her thoughts on Hannah’s untimely exit, and her one regret regarding the controversy.
To say this season of Below Deck Mediterranean has been a bit of a dumpster fire is putting it mildly. The series said good-bye to former Chief Stew, Hannah Ferrier when she was terminated for having “drugs” on board the yacht. Hannah wasn’t crushing Adderall and listening to EDM in the bathroom, she had an undisclosed prescription for Valium and a CBD vape pen. Thankfully bosun, Malia White was there to keep everyone’s moral compass in check and reported Hannah’s violation to Captain Sandy Yawn.
Viewers aren’t getting the “ladies in charge” vibe they were hoping for, but Captain Sandy has definitely taken Malia under her wing. She even went so far as to hire Malia’s
psycho boyfriend to replace the much-maligned Chef Kiko Lorran. Viewers have been pretty furious at both Sandy and Malia for how Hannah’s dismissal was handled, but now Malia might have her own bone to pick with Sandy. Recently the captain took part in a Cameo video, and what Sandy said could be the catalyst to sink her ship.
When it comes to my sh*t list, there are few people who are higher than Below Deck Mediterranean’s Malia White. Maybe Lisa Rinna or Teddi Mellencamp. But that’s definitely it.
I never really cared for Malia from the get go but after her snitching on Hannah Ferrier, I was done. Her defense of getting someone fired over a mental health issue was BS. With a capital B. So forgive me if I spend this story griping about Malia and the karma that has seemingly come her way.
Below Deck Mediterranean has had one hell of a season. Never before have we seen the crew try so hard to keep their jobs. First came the exit of second stew, Lara Flumiani. Then deckhand Pete Hunziker was (rightfully) let go after the season was done due to racist behavior. While it didn’t happen on the show, producers made sure to highlight what a scumbag he was. Chef Kiko Lorran was next after one bad night. And finally, the worst firing of them all was Chief Stew and longtime castmate, Hannah Ferrier.
Hannah’s firing caused a lot of controversy online and opened up a bigger conversation surrounding mental health. Captain Sandy Yawn, who did the firing and Bosun Malia White, came out looking pretty bad. In the wake of letting Hannah go, they promoted Bugsy Drake to Chief Stew. That left room for one more stew in the mix. Enter past cast member and fan favorite Aesha Scott.
It’s got to be difficult being a reality TV star. You don’t have control of unflattering edits, you’re at the mercy of non-disclosure agreements, and have to relive some of your worst days in the public eye. Social media is forever.
Hannah Ferrier is currently living her best life. She has a doting boyfriend and is pregnant with their first child. Love her or hate her, Hannah is undeniably happy and radiant. Getting fired from Below Deck Mediterranean was probably one of the best things that happened to her. But reliving it while the season is airing and having to respond on social media might not be.
The current season of Below Deck Mediterranean has been infuriating. On the most recent episode, Captain Sandy Yawn fired Hannah Ferrier for having Valium with her and failing to register the prescription with the boat. She also wondered if Hannah flushed the “drugs” down the toilet and chased Hannah down the dock to berate her.
Yes, Hannah broke a rule about registering medication. That is black and white. However, the way she has been treated has only heightened the stigmas associated with getting help for mental health concerns, especially since Malia White secretly took a photo to send to Captain Sandy and never fessed up to doing so. Neither of them demonstrated a shred of compassion for Hannah’s struggle with anxiety. Now, Hannah’s former friend, Kate Chastain, is speaking out about the drama. And, not surprisingly, she’s not on Hannah’s side here.
