While Amber Portwood had publicly expressed her wish to end her career with MTV’s mega hit show, Teen Mom, citing she felt “exploited,” it is now becoming extremely likely that Amber will never appear on another episode of the series.
If you recall, Amber was sentenced by an Indiana judge recently to either do five years in prison or a stint in a drug program. Amber wisely chose the latter and will be heading into the Sister 2 Sister Ministries program any day now, pending evaluation.
While the judge did not give Amber, 21, a clear time frame of how long she needed to be in the program, TMZ is reporting Amber was ordered to live in a halfway house for up to three years.
In addition to that, she must also get a court approved 9-to-5 job that she must attend at least five days a week. The judge, however, made it crystal clear that filming Teen Mom does NOT constitute as a job. In fact, the judge even went one step futher by stating Amber CANNOT film anything for MTV while staying at the halfway house, working her job or appearing in court.
The judge also got in touch with MTV, and the network promised the court it would not sue Amber for breaking her contract with the series due to her sentencing.
I’m not surprised MTV is willing to let Amber out of her contract as for starters, not agreeing to do so would equal very bad publicity for the network. Plus, following Amber’s suicide attempt last summer, something tells me MTV might be more than happy to part ways with her, perhaps not wanting to experience blame or backlash in the case of any future tragedy. In fact, just last October, Amber revealed she was still suicidal.
Amber’s departure from MTV would spell bad news for her baby daddy, Gary Shirley,who has reportedly blown most of his MTV earnings on boozing and strippers.

@1 Alaskan mama – Exactly. Glad to hear the courts are taking a stern stance w/Amber because she needs this type of extensive treatment with real life consequences for her actions.
I can’t help but think of Lindsay Lohan if the California courts had taken this type of recourse w/her maybe she would be living a much healthier life style.
I agree…she needs big time help..not a 5 day detox and this judge will save her life most likely. Amber was raised by two alcoholics what do you expect? Her mother was self centered just like Amber and I’m sure she didn’t have a role model on how to be a mom.
Good thing she will have to get a job or she might never do that with the easy MTV money.
I hope she makes it.

And if Gary has blown through his MTV money he is going to have to get a real job. He made a lot of extra money by calling the tabloids every time Amber made a move. Instead of calling 9/11 when Amber attempted suicide he called the tabloids. He really is pathetic. He isn’t healthy for her, and she knows it, but she kept him in her life. Hopefully now she can get some real help and get Gary out of her life for good.
He really just used Leah as a pawn. He threatened Amber and once he realized how much money Amber could bring him, she just became like one of those machines in a casino. He didn’t love her or respect her. You can have a relationship without love but you can’t have one without respect. I think she got all that anger inside of her because she saw that all he saw in her was a cash cow – and she has lost her teenage years to him. He kind of was like a child molestor in my eyes because he preyed on her – she was too young for him from the start. And then all he did was manipulate her from the day she got pregnant. It was just a gross relationship and I think she knew it.

Yes they will find a way to continue to exploit the family and the little girl, most likely through Gary and updates on Amber. And they will all go along with it , for the $$$ that they put in front of them.

I worked as a felony PO for quite a while and put many offenders/addicts into halfway houses or oxford houses as they are often called. Normally, the offender will go to the HH AFTER they complete inpatient treatment of at least 30-90 days. They need to get clean and sober and address their issues first.
I don’t like HH’s b/c I have never had very good success with them. Generally they are run by the residents and the residents are only required to obey rules like curfew and attend 1 AA meeting at home per week.
The ‘elders’ police the residents in case anybody comes home drunk/high etc.
Often times the offender has so much freedom that they end up getting drunk/high and breaking curfew or they just walk away from the house. They don’t usually last more than a month in my experience.
I don’t think this is the place for Amber at all. She has a personality disorder and anger management problems that have not been addressed. How long ago did she go through rehab? The only good thing is that she has been in jail and therefore is clean. This may be a different type of house than I am used to, so it may work out for her. Plus, the fact that she has 5 years backup time hanging over her head should be a bit of a motivator.
However, the fact that she is still blaming MTV for her problems shows that she still needs treatment and just doesn’t get it. She is responsible for her current situation and nobody else. She had no problem cashing those $280,000 checks! Nobody told her to abuse Gary or abuse drugs-she has to face the consequences for her actions. I am quite sure there is a lot MTV chose not to air that they could have, which would have produced much more serious charges for her. In fact I bet MTV protected her a lot more than she even realizes.
@11GreenMoon – that is really discouraging to hear regarding the HH’s. Sounds like the system is broke. Of course Amber has the incentive of not screwing up as prison time is hanging over her head. Problem is, addiction often trumps common sense.
All the teen moms need a reality check like this! These girls are just makin fools of themselves!

Gary definitely needs to get a job!!! He is way too old to be still living with his momma. If you recall, Gary was around 20 years when he got Amber, his best friend’s 16 year old sister pregnant. I hope this time away from MTV cameras help Amber to finally get her life together.
