Season 11 of the Real Housewives of New York was dominated by Luann de Lesseps. If Luann wasn’t center stage, her co-stars were gossiping about her behind her back. Luann’s arrogance, cabaret obsession and sobriety were all called into question during the season. Luann was usually denying, deflecting and oblivious to the concerns of her co-stars like Bethenny Frankel, Dorinda Medley and Sonja Morgan.
Luann’s road to sobriety has been bumpy, to say the least. An embarrassing arrest in Palm Beach in late 2017, two stints in rehab and probation violations have resulted in Luann’s sobriety becoming tabloid fodder. Luann admitted earlier this year that she had fallen off the wagon and was given additional probation restrictions. Some co-stars like Ramona Singer have accused Luann of continuing to drink, which she obviously did not appreciate.
So, you might wonder, how does Luann actually maintain her sobriety? You might be surprised–OK–very surprised, at some of the ways she avoids drinking. Page Six reports Luann recently shared some of the tricks she uses to stay sober on Sirius XM’s The Jenny McCarthy Show.
What does Luann do when she craves a drink? The former Countess revealed, “I’ll have a mocktail. You know what I’ve gotten into is Heineken Zero so I feel like I’m having a beer. I like beer in the summer because it’s cold and thirst-quenching.”

Oh, Luann! Isn’t part of staying sober avoiding triggers that remind you of drinking? Do you really think this is a good idea–especially for someone who has been to rehab twice in less than two years? Wouldn’t your sobriety be better served by reaching for a refreshing summer lemonade? And not the “hard” variety!
Apparently, Luann really likes the feeling of a drink. She shared, “So I’ll have a Heineken Zero so I feel like I’m drinking and I’ll vape too! I’ll take a puff on a vape and get through the moment.”
OK–I’ll agree that getting through the moment is preferable to drinking, but pretending you are drinking and having a vape? Did you learn these coping skills in rehab? Probably not!
Luann also compared her desire to drink to “a wave.” She explained, “It’s like you go to the beach and stand in the ocean and the wave is coming and it’s like, ‘Oh my God, here it comes!’ And then it comes and it breaks and it goes away. So do those feelings. So if you can just give yourself a deep breath and a minute to be like, ‘It’s OK. I feel this way. It’s alright to feel this way. It’s OK to want to drink because that’s–you have been doing this your whole life. So, take a deep breath and you know, reach for that mocktail.'”
Is reaching for a mocktail making a mockery of Luann’s sobriety? I am pretty sure mocktails aren’t served as refreshments at AA meetings! Removing yourself from triggers, reaching for a bottled water or avoiding environments where alcohol is served might be better ways to maintain sobriety–but what do I know?
