At the end of the day, no one can escape cancer. It doesn’t matter how rich you are or how famous you’ve become, this disease affects everyone. If you are lucky enough not to have it, you probably know someone who does. In 2018, Vanderpump Rules star, Ariana Madix was diagnosed with melanoma. This is obviously a far cry from the usual news we get from the Pump Rules camp. This does not involve alcohol or betraying a significant other. Nothing was filmed to provoke sympathy or attention.
We might actually be able to learn something from this one. And really, everyone should heed the warning. Ariana and longtime love Tom Sandoval were busy living their best lives. But while they were buying big houses and creating fancy cocktail books, something not so great was happening in Ariana’s body. She questioned her physician repeatedly over the years about a mark on her skin, and finally it was tested. Now Ariana is opening up about her diagnosis and subsequent surgery. She also has a message we should all listen to.
Ariana didn’t make a big deal about her cancer diagnosis. Believe it or not, despite what we are used to, not every medical event is plastered all over the media ad-nauseum. One year ago, Ariana was being wheeled into surgery. She had a mole biopsied and was advised she had melanoma. Because the mole was close to lymph nodes, it was surgery time.
Recently, Ariana took to Instagram to share a video taken by Tom. It was a rather intimate look at someone about to go under the knife and certainly not for elective reasons. Ariana felt it could be used in a positive manner and hopefully help other people.

The video shows Ariana after clearly being visited by an anesthesiologist. Tom said good-bye and gave his love as she was taken into the operating room. Ariana included the following caption, “I’ve been debating posting this for so long but whatever! I’m doing it. Officially the spookiest thing i’ve ever experienced! A year ago, I wasn’t able to celebrate my favorite holiday bc I had just undergone surgery for melanoma. Being told that cancer was living rent-free on my body for years was scarier than any 80’s slasher movie.”
Then Ariana thanked her physicians and Tom, for taking care of her during and after the surgery. “Thankfully, I had an amazing doctor, the amazing @tomsandoval1 to take care of me.” She received numerous comments of support from her followers, as well as her co-stars. Former SUR hostess Billie Lee wrote, “You woke my ass up for sure. I had all my moles removed and checked.” Friend and castmate Mrs. Jason Cauchi Brittany Cartwright said, “Love you girl!”

Ariana ended her post with some valuable advice, “[M]oral of the story: if you’re unsure of something on your body, GET CHECKED and then GET CHECKED AGAIN!” Y’all won’t find me often telling you to follow someone’s advice, especially anyone from Pump Rules. That includes whatever handy tips Kristen Doute might have about dating. BUT, listen to those who have been through it and always be a patient advocate for YOURSELF.
Glad to see Ariana is cancer-free and had a positive experience after surgery. We love the sun, but it is also trying to kill us, so wear your sunscreen liberally. Thanks to Ariana for sharing her perspective! Vanderpump Rules will return to it’s regularly scheduled debauchery in January 2020.
